Or you can download a sample version of NexTalk at: http://www.nxicom.com/

It's my understanding that NexTalk requires a modem that can transmit and
receive Baudot as well as the regular ASCII. I would suggest Futura
instead, which will work with an ASCII only modem to talk to a properly
built TTY with ASCII option. (Note: Most likely the friend's TTY does NOT
have this option, because it costs extra and TTY's are already rather
expensive.)

Yep, you're right. One thing I'm disappointed with NexTalk is their
selfishness to require people to buy THEIR modem in order to use THEIR
Windows TTY software. I already have an Intele-Modem, why should I have
to buy another modem? I don't even need, or will use their 19,200 baud
built-in ASCII modem. I have my own USR 33.6k Modem. I was told Norman
Williams no longer will update Futura. I want a true-windows based TTY
like NexTalk, instead of Futura in DOS. I use Windows NT 4.0, and DOS
programs are so slow using NT. The people at NXI need to make their
software hardware friendly. If you bought Procomm for Windows, are you
forced to buy a modem made for it? No. If you have Procomm, and decided
you want to use WinFAX Pro, do you have to buy another modem for this
software? No. Futura TTY CAN be used with NXI's modem, CM-4,
Intele-Modem and your own ASCII modem. Why can't the people at NXI make
their TTY software work with other modems, like Futura? Sheesh!

Glad to get that off my chest!

Guys and Gals,

About the tty compatible modems, I read the message threads. I can
understand the problems associated with the software and tty compatible
modems. I can understand if you buy Nextalk, then you must use their
modem since Nextalk was designed to work with their modem in tty mode.

Recently at Deaf Expo last month in Anaheim, Ca, I met Robert Kim who
desgined a window based program which will work with NXi Nexcom 300
modem and Ultratec Intelemodem. It is far much better than Nexttalk, in
terms of features and huge database capacities. I have seen his first
version and was impressed with his work. The program files are lot
smaller than Nextalk.

Unfortuantely, I have misplaced Robert Kim's tty number. He retail them
for around $150 for program only. His company name is International
Telecommuncation Company (ITC). If you will give me a few days and
contact me, I will get you his phone number for further information.

BTW, I am on outlook for new tty programs as well as modems and on
International Telecommuncation Union who approved the international tty
standards to be compatbiel to one other. The standard is V.18, it has
been approved but never manufactured by any modem manufacturers.

Hope this information helps.

Scott

That makes sense. It's probably a financial decision, tho.

I agree with you Rick... I just bought 33.6K US Robotics Winmodem for
$29.99 from the CompUSA grand opening store sales last weekend (limited
to ten first customers! I am one of first ten :) customers!)

Compared to the Nexttalk Modem limited to 14.4K for $279.99. Ugh!!!

However, I use this new modem for this Internet/WWW usage. And I do use
Nextalk Modem for TTY/300-2400 communication only. HOwever, there are
still bugs in Nextalk Version 2.10 ever since last August. Nxicom
people are aware of them but are too busy with other new products rather
than correcting the bugs in Version 2.10. Shame on NxiCom peopleof
thinking to meet the Hearies' needs rather than frustrated Deafies'!!!

Again, however, the other MODEM manufacturers are still afraid to
produce their own modems with TTY capabilities.

One thing to remember; when you buy the Nxi modem the software comes with it
at no additional charge. The whole thing costs under $300. The rumor is
that they are about to come out with a new model which will have a faster
modem than the present one. I have used the Nxi system for a few years now
on my computer and love it. It is very user friendly and I have never had a
problem with it. My daughter has gone through 2 1/2 :-) TTYs since I got
the NexCom/NexTalk.

But probably not enough to spend another $160.

Fear? I doubt it. I'm sure they consider it beneath their notice in some
cases, and for others who might be interested, there is no clear payoff.
No one knows how many people would buy these things because there are no
worthwhile statistics...that makes it hard to figure a price. Also, it's
my understanding that the impression of most people is that deaf people
are not able to pay for cost of the added feature. Perhaps what is needed
is something like what happened with the CC chip, where the engineering
was done for the manufacturers, and then the result given away for free.
