I'm guessing that as long as these users pronounce their words
consistently, then it should be ok.
But given that deaf users can't hear what they're saying, and
hearing-impaired users have difficulty hearing what they're saying, _do_
they pronounce words consistently?
Anyone have any experience? Anyone using VR software? If so I'd be
interested to know your aural history (ie deaf from birth, recently
deaf, etc).

I did that ten years ago, its just fine. You have to teach the
software your voice, you know that, right? If not, you should read the
instructions on how they work.
Last year I purchased IBM ViaVoice 98. The box said it needed a PC
operating at 166MHz, so I asked the salesman if it would still work on
a 100MHz PC. He said it would, so I bought it. It installed OK, but
when I "trained" it, it crashed. I uninstalled it, reinstalled it,
still crashing. Tried retraining, and it was still crashing. So I
haven't actually got around to using it yet!

It should, it flows to ram.
I tried VV on a Cyrix150/64Mb - it was unusable. On my 128mb/AMD400/2 is it
just about usable. Real voice handling is one reason gigahertz PCs are
needed!

I agree with you William that there is a difference between voice and
speech recognition, but I'm not sure about the example you give. I
consider voice recognition only determines "who" is speaking by
understanding differences between voices, and speech recognition
understands "what" was spoken (but not necessarily the grammar).
If you could develop a good speech recognition program you could offer
more than just your two cents worth!

The system found at the below address not only recognizes speech well
below foreground noise levels but it can also single out speech from a
particular person well below foreground noise levels. It performs
much better than normal hearing.
