Hello, participants of Deaf-L e-mailing list... I have extracted, and edited the
topic, 'Deaf Community Dying?', originally posted in WHATSUP5 public VAX notes
conference. It show the incredible insenstivities, diversities, and opinions at
Gallaudet University alone! This shows that we all need to learn from one
another, warts and all, in order to make a better society for the deaf in the
future. I'd suggest that you print it out, and read at your leisure. It's a
long posting. Enjoy, and learn what Gally U. is all about...

Yet another boring topic for WHASSUP5? Hark! This should be a hot one!
In the recent issue of Buff and Blue (Vol. 100, Issue 9, Page 2), there
was an article of a deaf gene found, in Costa Rica, of all places. They
found it in the genes of Felix Mongue, a guy with predominately deaf
genes, and 86 deaf descendants! But the tragedy is this: This can be
used and abused by some people, and misguided parents to eridicate
Deafness! This is called Genengineering, short for genetic engineering.
Does the right of a culture to exist takes precedence over the right of
the parents to choose a child free of any disabilities? Clearly, this
is a step in the wrong direction, or what? If we all can choose to have
deaf children, then we all would gladly choose that? I don't know what
the future holds for us, for science is killing us slowly... Truly we
are the Last of the Mohicans! Your thoughts, anyone?

Monkey Boy, stay on the damn point!

Anyway, it really confuses me because I was a native of one culture and
coming into another culture so this is an interesting topic. I don't
really know how a hearing parent could really change their genes to
make a child hearing. And I think deafness will be around for a VERY
long time.

But, I prefer for people to leave the nature of its handicap of the
5 senses such as: deafness, blind, walking impared, nose impared &
mental impared. If the dieases such as hutchinson, parkinson, obesity,
deformities and the rest of unnatural causes would be prefer to be
eliminated. Why some of them causes death, lack of social life and more
difficulty. Deaf, blind and the rest is easier because there are more
people like us than the people with deformities, & avoidable dieases.
Ya catch my drift?

It'd be wonderful in the politicians point of view....No deaf people,
therefore, no money going to pay for them etc. etc.
BUT ( a very big but)
I think that deaf people are so wonderfully immersed in their deafness,
that they'd do everything in their power to stop it...Frankly, folks,
Geneengineering could become the next "abortion" topic of the 21st
Century....

Deaf Community dying?

Heavans NO!!!

Why? It's growing!!! Now the census report has estimante that
deaf popluation is approxitmely 22 million in U.S.A. That's lot and
still growing. Also says the largest handicapped in U.S.A. are deaf.
The second largest handicapped are blinds, which is only approxitmely 8
million (not sure)
Therefore the deaf population is growing rapidly.. Believe me. I
betcha you all you will never know nor reconizge a deaf person because
that deaf person is practically normal execpt a hearing loss!!!

All rights reserved to deaf community!

Where did you get that information, Sean? For all I know last
year, the Census Bureau certified that there are only 20 million
Americans who are either deaf or hard-of-hearing. But 22 million,
it look like deaf Americans are breeding like rats in one year??
It would take about two-five years before the population
of deaf/hh Americans surpass 22 million. Let's not forget the older
folks who are in alarming rate lossing between 40% to 80% of hearing.
By the way, geneng(genetic engineering) is the only medicial
solution to deafness because there are more and more state of the
art medicial technologies that would benefit all handicappeds in-
cluding deaf people. Do you rather prefer people who are deaf stay
deaf forever? I doubt it.

After all, despite our deafness and our pride, we all have
the deepest wish: to be hearing. Period.

How could you even dare say that? I have no friggin' wish to be hearing
at all. This makes it sooo obvious that you have NO respect for your
deafness. I would NEVER EVER want to be hearing because then I'd miss
out on the glorious culture of the Deaf, the amazing world we are in.
One reason I LOVE being Deaf is that I get to see people's TRUE
perspective of the world--being Deaf gives you an unique perspective on
life--and I see how gray hearing people's perspectives are. So I'm 100%
glad I'm Deaf. Now, you have really insulted me by claiming we have a
real desire to be hearing. I just hope you watch what you say from now

Jeez, some people...are such hypocrites. If you would rather be
hearing, then go to a hearing university, become a hearie. It's as
simple as that.

Mr. Underhill,

Do you have a "Death Wish" or what; you just put yourself in a firing
squad, as the deaf jury reads the verdict "Mr. Robert Underhill is guilty of
treason and his punishment is DEATH."

This is a very serious charge, Mr. Underhill, you should reconsider
your statement that you wrote or leave Gallaudet at once. We do give
people the right to be but not the right to degrade deaf people as this
is pure injustice towards the deaf people.

Think again, Mr. Underhill, be a man and tell everyone that you are
sorry and think before you say anything towards the deaf, it can cause
problems.

True... Underhill has the right to say what he has had said...
AND the people who have demanded Underhill to apogilize also have a
rigtht to demand that he apogilize. Who's right here? The indivudal
or the group? This is clearly a moral question, and a problem we face
in everyday society. The group tries to press the indivudal into
accepting their views, and if the indivudal rebels, he or she is exiled
from that group. However, the Consitution protects the indivudal,
whether the group likes it or not. Everyone has a right to free
speech, but it is a question of how much free speech a person can have.

Confusing, isn't it? WELL.... I got that little bit of thinking
from my Moral Philosophy class, and that class has really opened my
eyes to society around me. However, I don't have any answers to who is
more right, Underhill or the deaf "group". Still I DO have an opinion
about this!

If a scientist invented something that would give a deaf person
perfect hearing, I think deafness will die out within around 100 years.
Oh sure!! Most of the people who are already deaf today will refuse to
become hearing, but what about deaf babies born into hearing families?
About 90% of today's deaf people come from hearing families, and won't
it be logical that the hearing parents would have their deaf babies
become hearing? That means that the deaf population will be cut down
to only 10%, and don't forget, there will always be SOME deaf people
who will want to become hearing in that remaining 10 percent. Deafness
will slowly die out until it will become eventually a lost culture
remembered only by interested hearing sociologists.

Depressing isn't it? I REALLY think that this is a question that
will have to be confronted by deaf people some day in the not too
distant future, as technology continutes its furious march forward.

Be prepared for that day, if it ever comes!!

Now I am here and I am VERY FURIOUS with you all that I
should apologize and demanded to explain. Nobody force me to do so, it
is my opinion and I am just being matter-of-factly, okay?

First of all, some of you people(offended ones) have no common
senses in understanding what is meant to be wished to be hearing. I
am surprised with you people have taking too much damn pride in
deafness, you should thank yourself for being human, I do. But what
dissed me is that you demanded me that I apologize. I refuse.
This is my dissension and I have every reason to believe that
all deaf people have the same feeling: wish to be hearing. Even
YOU don't know that, it is in your own hearts, your own souls that
carry the truth. You cannot be deaf, body and soul! Some deaf
people have stated that before and it is their mistakes. I try not
to be judgemental, but sometimes, the truth hurts. We are, especially
me, deaf and admitted that we are part of millions of Americans who
are handicapped.(We are NOT off the list! This is not labelling.)
We are deaf in physical(body), but not in soul. Let's not forget
we are mortals too! We are subject to all diseases, physical
defections, disorders, including deafness! We are vulnerable to this,
but our souls are not. Even when we die, we WILL get our hearing back
when walking toward the light. Do you know that every deaf American
born hearing for only a slight moment? This is true, even me, even
you. We lost our hearing after we were born(i.e. disease). I know
some interesting stories about deaf people from strong deaf families
but there are no questions that they are hearing in soul, even they
are deaf and proud of it.
I am also surprised that some of you people have taking too much
pride in deafness. Remember, pride is mortal sin. How would I suppose
to feel about a man who is blind feel pride about blindness? That's
BS! A blind man's greatest wish is to see. A deaf man(or woman)'s
greatest wish is to hear. Let's not be idiots here. You don't know
that in your heart, even in the deepest corner, that you wanted to
be hearing. Same thing for a blind man or woman. I NEVER heard of
any blind pride thing, there is nothing to be proud of being blinded.
Just pity. You know, the guy who is deaf and blind here in Gallaudet
( I don't know his name)? The one with the red coat and the stick?
One student who worked with him say that being blind does not
make him proud of it. He WISH to see everything, he want to SEE
the colors, the people, especially us, I. King Jordan, everything,
especially one certain special lady...Helen Keller. There are alot
of pictures of her, she was famous and this guy WANTED to SEE what
she look like. That is a blind man's perspective and it is the oldest
perspective for the blinded.
The deaf perspective is what is like to be hearing. I would like
to know what is like to be hearing(without hearing aids). You
would like to know what is like to be hearing. It would be a wonder-
ful experience. But there is deaf pride. C'mon, people, wake up and
smell the bloody coffees! There is a perspective we see here in Life
and that perspective is humanity. Deaf or hearing, no matter, we are
still human beings and we HAVE weaknesses, including deafness.
And that is why we have new medicial technologies that would
able to deal with deafness and I am not just saying that deaf culture
is heading for its destruction, deaf culture will survive for just a
long time and that is why we will be able to preserve it as part of
our history and the history of the human race. This is similar to
the Mayan and other old South American cultures that survived for
centuries and it is still working even today.
I anticipated this criticism and disappointments from you and
expect alot more. But I think it is high time for you to understand
our perspective and mine. I will understand your opinions and
held it to the highest regard. And let's be positive. Okay, people?
Peace.

Thank you,
Robert S Underhill

I'd advise Mr. Underhill not to...

He does have every right to express his feelings as Mr. Jungheim
said, But we as people have to stand back and take a objective look at
ourselves...and I think that Mr. Underhill made a very important
comment....we are all in the need to be hearing...

Now IO consider my self to be a dearie, or heafie, whichever you
prefer...and I would like to stop this being stuck in the middle..but I
can't I'm too ingrained in the hearing world to really get out of
it...Lessee, If i were to count the number of spoken words that I've
spoken and compared them to the signed words, the spoken words would
count for 99%...

I have a desire...

To become a normal person...to be totally free from the bonds of
deafness...but as I realize that it won't happen...then I live with it,
but not without that desire...

People, will you never understand, especially Alana. I will
not delete it or apologize. My comments stand. I don't think it
is necessary for me to apologize over a comment that is nothing
suggestive or offensive to anybody. I know being deaf is very
sensitive issue. But who care? I may accept my deafness and
I ONLY wish to be hearing for some GOOD reasons, like experience.
Some of you, especially dear Alana Beal, have strong deaf
backgrounds and I understand the concerns, but the world is
an ugly place to live with. We will have to endure it. Don't
tell me no bulls that the world don't need the likes of me be-
cause I am happening to be one angry deaf man and disappointing
with a huge gap among the deafs. I am not comfortable with it
and don't bother trying to tell me to get out. I am going stand
in the heat and God help me, nobody's going to stop me. Believe me,
I can change. Not everything.

You can rile me all you want, in the face of criticism from
the people I called "friends", I will face defeats and learn more.
But my comments will stand because I know the entire secrets
of deafness and wish to be hearing and I am not telling you because
like I said, the truth will hurt you.

After reading all of the replies, I have came to a point:
there are too much oppression, too many stupid-unfeeling doctors,
too many ingorant hearing teachers, and too many uneducated deaf
individuals. All of this leads to misunderstanding. And too much
diversity.

If we all could agree to one thing, and be PROUD of who we are as Deaf
individuals, then we wouldn't hear from what undie said. If his
hearing parents were educated about ASL, deaf culture, and all that, he
would accept his deafness today. I am damn positive his parents did
not try to sign. This, puts this attitude in him. SAD, but it happens
to some deaf individuals like him.

BUT, WE are responsible for all that. We need more DEAF teachers, more
DEAF presidents, DEAF leaders as well, more DEAF professionals, and
MORE attitudally deaf citizens. WE need to be educated FIRST, before
we can educate those dummy HEARIES.

But, look at the world today- they still look for ways to change
deaf people to hearing people... we have to stop it. We have to ban
the implants, ban the vaccine for the spinal meningittis, that is if we
want to keep it ALIVE in the world of DEAF.

Let me tell you; DEAFNESS is a term of those clinical hearies;
so theres no such term. In the field of womaness? huh? same thing.

Underhill, I think you need to read back the first reply, and think
about what u said. It is a fact that what u said was put in the wrong
terms. You should reconsider about apologizing to the Deaf community.

Deaf is not an handicap, SIMPLY because it has culture of its own.
If we didn't have culture and language the one and only, ASL, then we
are handicapped (impossible!)

Get it??????????????????????????? Underhill?
Why dont you take some courses? ASL structure or something like that?
U are one of those uneducated deaf individuals!

Like you said, they really want to protect their deaf culture,
then it is possible that all those unneccessary cures will be
eliminated. ONLY Deaf people can decide that. They would have to do
something. That also depends on how strong they are, too.

Complaining and being concerned are two different things.
Complaining does not get anywhere. Being concerned, you get to
do some action!

Think about it some more, I think u really aren't. Would you want
hearing kids? What would you do? How would you communicate with them?
If you had deaf kids, would you let them become hearing? Suppose there
was some cure, but only works on infants, and you are deprived of that.
WOULD YOU HONESTLY LET YOUR DEAF CHILD BECOME HEARING? I dont think
so.

However, i have reached the point where i take control of my own life

you may feel that you want to be hearing, which is fine with me.

go back to hearing eventhough they must keep their deafness....

But but..... one thing...underhill is right in one way.... about the
deaf-blind guy, named Chris. He have a desire to be sighted because he
can't see at all..I really understand how he feels. As for myself, I
have Usher's Syndrome, and I have to accept it, but i do NOT want to
have it...I want to be 100 percent SIGHTED.. but luckily that i have
plenhty of vision left so i do not have to worry about it... but think
about the future....I've worked with a lot of deaf-blind people and
talked with them.. they have NO desire to be BLIND.. They have been
thorugh frustrations, horror stories, etc etc.....I know what it's
like...

But deafness is unique....of course...

have cerebral palsy..what do you wish for??? think about it
carefully....

Such a nice little vicious argument is going on here, can't help but
give my 2 cents.

First the Deaf thing. As I explained to my dearest mom, most Deaf
people want to be hearing about as much as I want to be white. Sure,
it would be nice not to have to deal with racial prejudice, not to be
the only brown face in my fraternity composites, not to have anyone
tell me how much I've accomplished for being Hispanic, sure, in society
it is generally easier to be white than the more aestheticlly pleasing
brown, but God made me brown and I like it and I don't want to be
white. So, I can see the Deaf opinion on this. On the other hand, I
know some friends who are tired of this, tired of the oppression tired
of everything, and wouldn't mind being white. Their business.

Now, the more offensive part. I've noticed an appalling lack of
openess here. Robert, know for his inflamatory views, has once again
hit a sensitive nerve here in Whatsupland. Trudster et. al., let me
make this clear, you, hmmm, how do I phrase this, hmm, let's see, want
to get the right mixture of honesty and tact in here, hmmm, let's see,
oh, I got it.
Trudster et.al., you disgust me, your comments are the kind of fascist,
PC puke that iritates me like festering boil on my butt.
I hope you get my point. You don't like his comments, feel it is
wrong for him to speak for all deaf people? Too bad, whatever happened
to respect for other's speech and opinions? Or does that only count
when the people write things that agree with you all? Now it's one
thing to disagree, but to do all this? No, I don't think so, and don't
lay that "well he shoudn't speak for all deaf, it's not me, it hurts my
feelings" garbage on me. You don't like his opinion, give your own,
don't attack him. You're more than welcome to say "Robert doesn't
speak for all deaf and I think this, and this." but these personal
attacks? These demands for apologies, give me a break. If your
feelings are hurt so easily, go somewhere else and find a sandbox to
play in, it will be alot more safer and no one will hurt your precious
feelings.

Robert, I don't believe in what you said, but I believe in your right
to say it in an atmosphere of freedom and respect, I'd apologize to
these bunch of PC jerk-offs when the nether world freezes over. Hang

I hate to digress from what has turned into a stimulating (if rather
touchy shouting-match-type of) discussion, but I felt I had to comment
on Reddy's description of wheelchair users as being "strapped" to their
wheelchairs.

I have a roommate who uses a wheelchair, and when I went to college in
California there was a graduate student on my floor who used a
wheelchair. If a fairy godmother were to come up to either one of them
and offer to wave a magic wand so they could walk like your average
person, I'm sure they'd both be happy to take the chance. But they
don't see their wheelchairs as something that "confines" them. Their
wheelchairs FREE them to do things and go places they couldn't do or
visit if they had a wheelchair.

I think the problem is that wheelchairs have become so closely
associated with physical disability that some people have come to
define the wheelchairs themselves as BEING the disability. Nuh-uh--a
wheelchair is a TOOL.

If society went out and kidnapped nondisabled people and glued their
butts to a wheelchair, then THESE people would LITERALLY be confined to
their wheelchairs, because there are indeed things you can't do from a
wheelchair that you can do on your own two, healthy feet. These
hypothetical butt-glued-to-the-wheelchair folks are having something
taken AWAY from them.

Physically disabled people, however, are being GIVEN something when
they obtain a wheelchair. They are being given greater freedom,
freedom they would not have without a wheelchair.

I'll get off my soapbox and let the discussion get back on track.

deaf in my heart and have a lot of deaf friends to hang out. Of
course, they are not like my friends here at Gally but I still love

think that Gally would be "too easy" for her and not the same amount of
education as hearing education. I tried to explained to her and
convinced her that Gally is not that easy... Also, she refused to hang
out with deaf people much. She would be with her deaf friends at home.
i wouldn't give up on trying to convince her and her mother is ver
strictly about deaf culture. I asssumed that she is being
"brainwashed" by her mother. If I was granted with a wish that I could
be hearing, I am still going to reject it because I love being deaf
because that is who I am... I am just proud to be deaf and I am glad to

Those who whine about DEAF, have their rights because they have

the DEAF culture should not be negative towards the culture. What kind
of a fool would say something negative about a culture that s/he has

And I'm afraid that Mr. Santistevan is right after all, Miss Suggs.
You can be a fascist at times. You can only state YOUR own opinion,
but YOU can't oppress others from saying their own opinions. If one
thinks negative of something, the best way is to let the person learn
about that negative aura...instead of lambbasting the person on what he

consider myself as a purely normal kid in this world! Same as among the
other deaf people. Why?? Deaf population grew so so so rapidly!! and
There is alot of advantage in Community technology which helps us
better needs.. Closed capitoned... TDD... Doorbells... etc...
Please.... DO NOT CONSIDER YOURSELF AS "HANDICAPPED"!

I repeat.... "Please do not consider yourself as handicapped.

I do have a bad habit... expecting some kind of special better
privlages being deaf as handicapped... parking the car in HC zone...
Get into the line first becz of being helpless... Many more things... I
am beginning to working to withdraw my bad habits... I am trying to
stop those bad habits which I begin to resist some peer pressure,
saying hey.. once, it wont be hurt.. its nothing.. etc...

I am deaf, Yes.. but not an handicapped!!!! I can run, play, sleep,
talk, eat, jump, sit, write, read, viewing, etc.. You name it... Does
it applies to handicapped? Crippled? no! many other stuffs!!

I recommend you to try follow my steps. Do not consider yourself as
deaf in handicapped section! Deaf is only one defective loss in
hearing. It doesn't applies to others!! Hey, Fight hard!! Live your

not permitting deaf people to express anything other than

Ok, here's my point..

In reality, deafness is an handicap. Simple, it is because we don't
have perfect ears, of course, and I agree that we DON'T feel
handicapped while it is anyway. I know being deaf is being handicapped,
but I DONT feel like one like most of y'all.

To those who disagree with what I said above:

IF..if..if you dont agree with me, then why the HECK are you doing
with the SSI money which is designed for handicapped people? Just go to
Financial Aid Office, and ask for SSI phone number, so you can call and
withdraw your income from the SSI to be non-handicapped. Til then, take

Deafness may be Handicap but it is called invisible
handicap because people don't know if you are deaf or not. In my heart,
I don't think of myself as handicap. I think of myself as hearing
impaired, that's all. Handicap means you are unable to do what u want.
The only thing we are unable is to hear. I don't need to hear to get
anything I want. I can speak or write.... It is hard for people to
notice which one is deaf. We can't go around and ask each person if
that person is deaf or not. That would be ridiculous!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, Underhill, at least you do have the right to put your thoughts
into words about whatever opinion you have to express. I tend to think
that many of us with varying degrees of hearing loss from the profound
to mild do have a sort of subconcious longing to hear normally. Perhaps
for those who are profoundly or severly deaf do have some sort of a
desire or wonder what sound is like. What is it like to hear classical
music, rock or even rap? Why a gurgling brook is so relaxing to hear
after a nice hike thru the forest? Ever wonder how birds singing sound
like during a warm spring morning? Have you ever wish at one time or
another to be able to converse with those who are hearing and be able
to join in on the joke? The subconscious mind is the real heart of
desires, fantasies, and nightmares.

Now, I *didn't* say all of you have this longing to hear like the rest
of the hearing crowd. I think Underhill was in the right direction
but some of the words he choose came out a bit on the off side.

-< Some clarifications here... >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me clarify everything here and it would save alot of confusions
here. Some of people have interesting sayings but are misguided.

First of all, Alot of people are angry at me because I made
a little flaw in stating that ALL deafs wish to be hearing. Well, the
real truth was that the time I was writing down my 2 cents worth on
reply .8 so fast and I left without proofreading. I was in a hurry
and that reply was NOT a prepared statement. I jotted it down fast
enough to give me time to leave. I didn't anticipated this, but I
expected alot of people disagreeing with the idea of geneng(genetic
engineering) and I have NO IDEA that some deaf people were angry at that
last sentence in my reply. It wasn't until I found out later when reading
alot of blasts and criticism on me about the wish to be hearing and
not the hot water of geneng. Then the incident at cafeteria last Monday
gave me something I did noticed, the word "ALL" say them. I was little
confused but angry and upsetted by an appalling lack of openness, as
Ernie stated. Then I went back to the now controversial topic and
recheck my original statements and carefully analyzed the situation.
I swallowed a big lump in my throat when I noticed that I FORGOT
to add the word--"may" to the last sentence. Therefore, it would be
this, "...despite our deafness and our pride, we all MAY have the
deepest wish: to be hearing. Period." Remember, "...all may have..."
I am speaking OF the people in general, not FOR. That is why you
people have been blasting at me for speaking for you. I was NEVER
speaking for you, I was speaking OF you, in general. I wondered these
repliers have passed Eng 50 already. A surprise number of them haven't.
I have. I may be better careful the next time, but you people should
be careful in reading and analyze the sentences before replying because
it would get everything in confusion. Now the answer is that some of
us wish to be hearing and some of us don't want to. That's the sad
truth and their business. I have to respect that.
As for apologizing, FORGET it. It is my opinion and I cannot
apologize for my opinion BUT I can admit my mistake and I am ad-
mitting now. But apologizing, again, forget it.

Another thing, for some misguided people about confusing "hearing
impaired" for an ugly word and "deaf" pretty. Well, you're wrong. I'm
afraid I am telling you that you are very wrong. You see, hearing
impaired MEANT deaf. Both have the very same meaning, yessir! But both
are not in speaking of pronouns, like formal and informal. The word,
deaf, is informal and widely spoken and sign by regular people like
us. Hearing impaired is formal and it is used in business conductions
and professorial identifications. I took PSY 111-a career orientation
class that every freshman is required to take the first or second
semster, I asked Hilel Goldberg, who is deaf, that which word that
best describe when putting or answering the question like "Do you
have any disabilities that we may like to know?". He suggested the
word, "hearing impaired" because it is very formal and businesslike.
What happened if you put down the word, "deaf" would put the
employers in consideration and sometime, doubt. This may be sounded
political correctism but it is very necessary to identify deaf people
as "hearing impaired". It is okay to be called deaf by friends and
relatives, sometime, when making some business or meeting some im-
portant people, the term hearing impaired is more suitable. That is
the thing of the real world out there when we graduate.

So that is all I can say for now and hope everything is clear
as the blue sky.

Id like to reply to .116 First of all, Hearing-impaired should not be
an enemy word. It is a true word. Second of all, the reason why I say
this, if you are totally deaf, can't hear a sound or whatsoever then
you would be considered deaf. But if you can hear some sounds then you
would be considered hearing-impaired, the reason why I say this, for
such examples. A person wearing glasses- would you say he is blind, no
he is visually impaired but can see with glasses or contacts, but for a
person who can't see at all would be considered blind!!! THerefore it
is almost the same idea!!!! BUt then again I am speaking from my own

-< clarification of definitions >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whoa. Check the dictionary, folks.

According to the dictionary, "hearing impaired" is NOT a perfect
synoymn of the word "deaf". A "hearing impairment" refers to ANY
degree of hearing loss, whether mild (hard of hearing) severe,
profound, or total.

The definition of deaf is NOT limited to total deafness. If it were,
then almost no one would be considered "deaf," since almost everyone
has SOME residual hearing--maybe not much, but a little (e.g. just
enough to just barely hear a rock music band turned up at full volume
right next to your ear drum). Nuh-uh. Deafness has been defined to
mean a hearing loss severe enough that you cannot understand speech
without the aid of amplification and/or (or just and??) speech reading.

Audiologists call ME deaf, even though I can hear voices WITHOUT A
HEARING AID (only a eensy weensy bit in my right ear, and not enough to
distinguish anything, but I do hear 'em) because even WITH
amplification, I wouldn't be able to follow a whole conversation
without speechreading. And even with speechreading, I can still have
one heck of a lot of trouble.

Hearing people are badly screwed enough with misconceptions about
deafness (the mother of a friend of mine was totally freaked out to
discover that I, despite being very definately DEAF and NOT hard of
hearing, actually could hear, and even enjoy, music) without us
"deafies" getting confused about the definitions too.

I say that the deaf community is still alive and kicking. We still
have AAAD, GUAA, and NAD events. Not only that, I've already travelled
cross-country and visited several deaf clubs...some of them are dying,
some of them are still strong. For instance, I went to Fremont,
California. Where it is the mecca for the deaf in the West Coast. But
I found that the place is family-oriented. VCR rentals, TVs, outdoor
activities with their own cliques, and finally, watching their children
GROW. See what I mean??

The Deaf Community may be dying like there is a strong sentiment
of APATHY here at Gallaudet.

GALLUJ::11ASHETTLE 32 lines 7-FEB-1992 09:46
-< clarification, i hope, of misunderstanding >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To note .131, 16RTaylor:

A certain individual obviously has not been reading my note carefully.

Go back to note .122, where someone suggested that "deaf" means no
hearing at all, useful or otherwise, and hearing impaired means
residual hearing.

Then go back and reread my note, .129.

Tell me, please, WHERE in my note did I in the least imply or suggest
that should all start using the term hearing impaired, just because it
happens to be a technically correct term for most of us here at Gally?

Correct answer: no where.

I even have a T-shirt from the Bi-cultural center saying "I'm deaf not
hearing impaired". I do respect the right of indivdual people who, for
whatever reason, prefer to call themselves hearing impaired. This is a
free country. But I do not call myself hearing impaired, and I do not
ever tell people they should use that term, nor do I ever suggest in
any way that the word "deaf" has something wrong with it.

So in the future, before you take offense at something, take a deep
breath, go back and read the passage carefully and make sure it really
said what you think it said. If it still says what you think it said,
wait a day and read it a third time, THEN go ahead and present your
views on the matter.

Thenk yew.

With the DEAF people in power and in the position to change

the dB loss required to screen out hearing impaired persons and
screening out persons with a good talent of speech....I can perfectly
imagine that and to tell the truth, with the attitude of DEAF people

Mickey at .141,

Yeah, should have included it. Only people the government views as

up to our eyebrows, or quit school.

So, the question now is, are Deaf people handicapped or 'disabled'
or 'differently abled' or whatever the current politically correct term
is?

Now remember, if Deaf are not disabled and just the same as all us
hearing folks, then say good bye to all that SSI, low Metro fares and
most importantly, it's hasta la vista to ADA protection.

The Nerd's eye view on this whole matter? Glad you asked. Deaf
like I've seen around here ranging from Kelby to the Trudster, to Karl
to Ms. Johanson are about as disabled as me. Any one who says that the
Deaf are disabled obviously hasn't had the extreme pleasure of
experiencing Deaf culture first hand, it's alot of things (some of them
unmentionable due to profanity rules) but it's not disabled. So,
should the Deaf still be protected under ADA? Yep, I think so, for

the word I'm looking for, nope, that's profanity again, well, I know
how disabled you are, unfortunately, 99% of the population doesn't.

population comes to 'appreciate' the Deaf as much as I have.

Gosh, you're so wrong that you can't pound me! All right, I
don't give a damn about hearing people calling us hearing impaired
just because of your deaf background. Know what, it was NOT a hearing
guy that termed the word, deaf, as "hearing impaired". In fact, it
was termed by a deaf man a long time ago. When I was the first time
here, there were a NSSA of the NSP, told us an interesting history
of the deaf people and why the hearing impaired label? Well, she
said that deaf mean hearing impaired. Hearing impaired mean deaf.
Nothing more. Hearing impaired is not an ugly word, it is an
identification, a very formal one, that define the deaf people of
their hearing losses. Being deaf is acceptable word here because it
is very informal. That obviously explained that some of you have
poor understanding of English language. Some of you couldn't tell
which word is formal or informal. Sad but true. *shaking head in

In the Webster dictionary the word "deaf" means:

"not perceiving sounds; totally or partially unable to hear"

The word Hearing-impaired is not in the book!

Hearing-impaired is used to hide their deafness and show the hearing
people that the only thing is wrong with them is their hearing, so its
impaired. I rather go to the hearing world and tell them I am Deaf and
most of the time they become shocked and overwhelmed with your utmost
ability to do anything. "Deaf people can do anything except Hear."

The word "DEAF" has been around so long, way back in the days of the
Philosophers and why want to change it now, what are you guys
embarrassed about? You may talk well but it doesn't change the fact
that you are Deaf, I can talk well but my audiogram says I have the
loss of 105dbl of both ears and I would not be stupid to say, "Excuse
me, I am hard-of-hearing or hearing-impaired," because in fact that I
know I am profoundly DEAF.

I just wanted to make a point, why fuss over the word DEAF, what's
wrong with it, is it cancerous, or what!

A good one, Hardy, that clarified everything. The concept of
deaf and hearing impaired has been remained the same for a long time.
The truth is that I am not awared of the so-called "audiologist's
terming of the word, "hearing impaired" meant deaf. But I rather
not let deaf people make hearing people "scapegoats" for calling
us deafies "hearing impaired". I don't blame hearing people for that
because I felt it will create more barrier between the two peoples.
