How Do I connect my CoCo3 to an Amiga 1080 Monitor?

A Commodore Monitor (Amiga 1080) is being shipped to me. I won it in an
ebay auction. I bid on it because I was told that this monitor works with
my CoCo3. Anyone know HOW it works? Do I connect it with the composit
connectors? Do I rewire the analog RGB connecter?

Many Amiga/Magnavox monitors are one and the same. I interchange my
Commodore 1084 monitors and Magnaox Professionals all the time for
use onthe Amiga and the CoCo. Now there are certian kinds of Commodore
monitors that will give you problems, they are the ones that have the
video interface hard wired into the monitor. I hope your 1080 is not
one of those. You'll be stuck with the composite input in that case
unless you know how to make a custom connector. I also remember
hearing about messing with the vertical sync for those kind of
monitors too. I don't anything more about that. Regards

I'm sorry... I was mistaken... thank god... that stuff Rich wrote was
scary...

It is a 1084... so does this connect directly to the coco3 without
modifications?

The most you should have to do is make a cable. The pinouts have the same
general characteristics.

The 1084 pinout is here:
http://lwp.ualg.pt/docs/hwb/co_C1084a.html

The Coco pinout is here:
http://lwp.ualg.pt/docs/hwb/co_Cm8CoCoRGB.html

You will have to use an RCA cable to get sound from the coco.

I use a 1084 with mine. There is a small deal with wiring the sync signals.
I believe both H sync & V sync from the coco are tied together and fed into
the monitors H sync, which is composite sync in analog mode. I'll have to
check my schematics to make sure.

There are 2 ways to do this...

In both cases, connect the R,G,B lines together. The trick is in the sync. The
CoCo has separate horizontal and vertical syncs coming out of the RGB connector.
To make thinks more complicated, they are positive going. To use these 2 lines,
they need to be connected together and inverted using an inverting transistor.

A simpler method is to feed the composite video out (from the RCA connector)
into the Amiga monitor's composite sync pin. It works for me!

The 1084 will accept positive or negative sync. No other circuitry is
needed. You do have to tie them together.

The connector on the back of an Amiga is a DB-23, but the connector on
the back of a 1080 for RGB is a bog standard MALE DB-9.

As the owner of three 1080's, I can verify this by direct visual
inspection. :)

Didn't intend to scar 8-). If it's a true 1084 your CoCo monitor
should plug into the monitor and you'll be on your way. If on the
other hand it has a joystick type nine pin RGB connector.... I don't
know if you can use it or not without going through what I mentioned
before. Commoder sold both kinds under the name 1084.

And as an owner of a 1084, the Analog RGB port on the back of a 1084 is a
6 pin DIN. The manual (and the page I posted earlier) say it has a
separate Vsync and HSync. On the other hand My unknown monitor (the one
I'm using, and is possibly a 1080 from the descriptions) has the DB-9
connector and the mixed Sync signal.

My 1084-D has a DB-9 connector. I assume that there are at least 3 other
styles of this monitor. A,B & C

Hmm. Not when I tried it. Maybe PAL 1084's are different?
