Some really disturbed person wrote, in part:

"Self-absorbed bitch?" Is this the only way you know how to describe
women?
My god, you must be a sad and bitter person.
I have never read a post on any newsgroup, anywhere, in which someone
revealed
their deep self-loathing as much as in your post.
I feel sorry for you. I hope you get the help you need.

I believe both responses were not necessary. Both people could have
chosen
to advocate a position from the review but just wasted email space
instead on
messages that should have been private. As a list member, I do not
not to
read that 1) one member believes another needs mental health help OR
2) that
one believes that everything the other person does is a "fucking"
something
and he'd like to cause violence to that person (especially in the wake
of
Littleton, CO, I do not feel like reading this).
I do feel watching a film for 30 minutes with another person and our
both
finding it absolutely disgusting and degrading is a valid response to
a work
of art. You can chose to accept or reject this opinion but it might
be nice
to use language that one might see in a film review in the legitimate
press.
That is normally how I expect a mature, educated person to act.
I do not see any point to posting a response that has the word FUCKING
as
every other word. If the rest of you feel this sort of juvenile
venting is
necessary to your lives, however, could you at least post on the
Subject line
that it might be offensive or a waste of time to others on this list?
I
believe this is simply called manners.

Get real! A waste of whose time? Don't kid yourself. You, like the
rest of us "juveniles," are on this list because you have plenty of
time to waste. As for your aversion to masturbation and the words
"fucking" and "bitch," I've got news for you - they're necessary to
our lives (well, to me, the words as much as the actions), so deal
with it. It's the "mature" and "educated" thing to do. Another
mature and educated thing to do is not to call other people immature
and uneducated. That is so self-absorbed and bitchy, you know. Oh,
yeah, where were we? Movies! Saw a work-in-progress test-screening
of FLAWLESS, with Robert De Niro and Phillippe Seymour-Hoffman. All I
can say is that what I saw was far from finished. I promised not to
reveal any more. Let me add, however, that I'm looking forward to the
final print sometime in December.

Since you are unwilling to exercise the slightest consideration for others,
including the courtesy of an accurate subject line to warn someone of your
offensive posts, I will be deleting your posts without opening from here on
in. May you learn something from the world of film but, frankly, I doubt it.

Carol
I will do the same thing hence forth.

But, see, the funny part is, Carol, Rolando's posts are almost always
obscene or offensive. That's what makes them so great.
He's been here longer than I have and that's a long time. It would be
ill-advised to delete his posts as they often the most entertaining of all.
He's mostly kidding but he refuses to use smileys so sometimes he enrages
people. But, though this is an annoying thing to hear, you might want to
A) lighten up...B) Rethink your position in a few days, C) read some of
Rolando's posts in the archives. You'll find him to be a funny, brilliant
satirist.
OCC-God, is THE ROCK the worst movie ever or what? I tried to watch it the
other night but couldn't bear to see those great actors in such a
ridiculous movie.
Sasha

I have read his Posts and I don't find him at all funny or insightful. I
believe in the First Amendment but I also have the right to stop a message
for any reason and mindlessness, obscenity and profanity qualify. It's been
many months I've been reading him and they have been gutter level
communications throughout. If he is the future of the cinema, which I doubt,
I think I'll stick with old fogeys like Roger Ebert and Janet Maslin. At
least they can write coherent sentences which he cannot. Someone else wrote
me and reported that it was adios time for them and I've noticed that a lot
of the people I used to enjoy here are gone. I will probably leave next as I
don't like reading contentless messages.
Carol
What was that unforgettable phrase? Mediocre half-wits and pretentious
something or other, I can't recall.
There are plenty of other lists out there that are moderated, etc.

Ok, I'm unsubscribing. Only one person has supported my position and that's
not enough. Obviously I'm the odd person out. Goodbye, folks, and good luck.
Carol
<< The best movies are the ones which do not carry the 4 letter words. They

Some of the best movies have ugly women that use 4 letter words, too.
Talk about bad light...
Who could forget Linda Blair in The Exorcist?
-Robert
I joined this list because my internet buddy, Jeff, recommended
it and because I have a love of movies. I was hesitant, though,
because I thought it might be pretentious and stuffy. I'm was
happy to see that it wasn't. :-)

Yup.

I liked THE ROCK when I didn't have to sit through 10 minute commercials
every 5 minutes. I liked watching Ed Harris strut his stuff and I especially
liked the way Cage and Connery played off of each other.
Cheryl
p.s. Saw Pushing Tin over the weekend. It was very entertaining and Billy
Bob and Cusack were very good. I have to get on an airplane tomorrow, so my
timing was a bit off, but oh well......
Cheryl
Carol, I'm surprised at your response. You seemed to have been enjoying
the list well enough. I personally have appreciated your posts, but if
you're looking for "morally correct" writing, this ain't the place.
I might extend that to all of the internet, with a few exceptions, maybe
there's a Dr. Laura newsgroup or a Christians for Movies newsgroup or
perhaps there are more professionally designed websites with chat groups
that do not allow profanity - CNN (though not about movies) is one.
For what it's worth, I am sorry you're leaving Cine-l for this reason and,
as I said, I wish you'd reconsider. It's really not as bad as you think.
But one of the great things about it is "anything goes."
I respect your need to express your position and your beliefs, though.
Good luck to you, too.
Sasha
..ps/non-cinema-related: does anyone know a good way to get rid of
house-bound rodents that doesn't require a mouse trap? OCC-why didn't
anyone tell me Kevin Spacey was doing THE ICEMAN COMETH on Broadway?
Remember Dustin Hoffman in TOOTSIE getting mad because a soap star got his
part?
"Michael, no one will hire you."
Also, over the years, I suspect that more than one person has been posting
from that address - However, I'd agree that sometimes there are interesting
things said - Often observations about film take second place to attempts
at humor but who cares - I disagree that one is ill-advised to delete - In
fact, if you read one in ten you've not missed much unless you need
constant infusions of a certain kind of humor
Peter
>As a matter of fact I'll be seeing Spacey in the play in a couple of weeks
>
I'm becoming more and more fond of Kevin Spacey as the years go by, as the
characters role by. I first admired him in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS and now,
well, big sigh.
Speaking of dreamy actors, that Joe Fiennes! I saw his debut shot in
ELIZABETH (I did not watch the movie, haven't yet had the time) and about
died. I think he puts his brother in a shadow. And you all know how I
liked ol' Ralph way back when.
Here's a "He's Dreamy" list for 1999:
Kevin Spacey
Joseph Fiennes
Ewan McGregor
That dark haired kid from Dawson's Creek (what is his name?)
The guy who plays Will on Will and Grace (big movie career ahead, I'm sure)
Jude Law
Kevin Spacey
Vince Vaughn (even though he is a "Shari Frat Boy")
Kevin Spacey

who's this Dr. Laura person? is (s)he like Michael Medved?

oh, i love that song. though i am not a great romancer/i know what i'm
going to answer when you propose...

I don't think it's more than one person - but it certainly may be split
personalities. Whatever, Rolando on a roll has always been my favorite dish
on this menu.
