Happy Friday,
Thanks Ormond. I KNOW this is true also. In 1973 CICS was HERE in the
USA. One of these days I'm going to find the IBM'ers (they are still
around) and get the scoop.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the prefix DFH predates the move to
Hursley by a long shot...

Rumor has it that way back when in a land far, far away, the
IMS/DC developers were concerned about the competition from an
upstart program product called CICS. They decided that the country
wasn't big enough for the both of them, and talked the
IBM gods into moving it to England, thinking it would die. When this
happened, they also changed all the message prefixes to
DFH - "Destined for Hursley".

Not my story, it came from an old, long time CICS IBMer who told it to me
with great pride in the late 70's. I found it interseting, but highly
questionable.

My whole name is Ormond Donald Higgins. A lot of people call
me Don rather that Ormond. So, I am DH -- not DFH. And, I did
not write CICS -- Ben did.

I have the original announcement letter dated April 29, 1968. Back
then it was called Public Utility Customer Information Control
System. "It is a new program modularly constructed to provide
the basic control system structure for the installation of electric,
gas, and telephone company information systems." The product
cost $600/mo. The Program Description Manula cost $5.00, the
Operation Manual cost $1.30, and the System Manual cost $16.50.
That was all of the documentation available.

CICS/INTERNET !

Ernie, The guy was Ben Riggins, or something like that, so it just
goes to show how Systems people keep myths going ha?.....:-)
Dennis F.
Higgins rhymes with Riggins...?

At the risk of responding too late for anyone to care... My understanding
is that it stands for Donald Frederick Hill. I believe I can by this
knowledge for Bryan (sp) C. Verhoff of Verhoff and Associates. Seems he
too was an IBM developer way back in the old DOS days and he wrote/developed
much of the dispatcher code. Those portions (read programs) bore his initials
BCV. Some of you might remember seeing these letters in older code.

I hope I haven't bored you or that my info is inaccurate. If so its Bryan's
fault.
