>>>2. Prozac study

[The following review is based on information provided by the Melvin
Ramsay Society of Britain.]

A Netherlands study indicates that treatments of fluoxetine (also
known as Prozac) at 20mg daily shows no benefit for CFS patients.
The study did not try the treatment at the lower dosages that are
used by many clinicians when treating CFS. The study compared 44
depressed CFS patients with 52 non-depressed CFS patients for eight
weeks of treatment. The researchers conclude that "fluoxetine in a
20mg daily does not have a beneficial effect on any characteristic of
CFS. The lack of effect of fluoxetine on depressive symptoms in CFS
suggests that processes underlying the presentation of depressive
symptoms in CFS may differ from those in patients with major
depressive disorder". See:

Vercoulen J, et al; Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled
study of fluoxetine in chronic fatigue syndrome. Lancet, 1996,
347, 858-861.

>>>3. Borna virus disease associated with CFS?

A study of 25 CFS patients in Japan showed that 32 percent showed
evidence of exposure to Borna disease virus, although similar results
have been seen in those with other conditions. A report on this
study had been presented at the 1995 CFS medical conference in
Brussels. See:

peripheral blood mononuclear cells derived from Japanese patients
with chronic fatigue syndrome. Federation of European Biochemical
Societies Letters, 1996, 378, 145-149.

>>>4. U.S. Congress calls for change of name

The U.S. Congress is calling for a change of the name "chronic
fatigue syndrome". A June 27 report of the U.S. House Committee on
Appropriations has directed the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human
Services to produce such a report. That department includes and
oversees the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The language of this Congressional directive has been promoted for
several years by the CFIDS Association of America, but in previous
years the call for a name change had always been deleted from the
final report. This year the language has remained intact. The
relevant section of the report states: "The Committee recognizes that
there is a consensus in the CFIDS community that the name chronic
fatigue syndrome does not adequately describe the complex nature of
the illness. The committee asks the Secretary to convene a committee
for the purpose of examining this issue and to report back within six
months of the bill's enactment with recommendations for a new
scientific name or eponym that more appropriately describes the
illness known as chronic fatigue syndrome." The appropriations bill
is scheduled to be enacted by September 30, although in recent years
this has been delayed.

The CFIDS Association of America has issued a press release which
gives more details about this news, and which urges patients to
contact Congress about CFS issues. To obtain a copy of that press
release, send an e-mail message that says
