FROM THE GROUP MANAGERS to all readers of CFS-L / alt.med.cfs:

This is a special notice to (1) call for volunteers to help manage the
discussion group, and to (2) explain how to avoid newsgroup problems by
reading the group either via the new WEB interface, or by the old e-mail
method.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

We need volunteers! We need help manage the CFS discussion group by
monitoring, moderating, and giving technical support. This CFS group is
run by volunteers, and it will only be as good as you help make it!

Here is what these volunteers do:

MODERATORS help ensure that we all stay within the rules that have been
developed to enable this group to be a fair and effective forum for
exchanging information and support.

MONITORS assist the moderators by reading certain topics and alerting the
moderators to problems. Monitors do not contact other members, they
simply refer problems to the Moderators.

TECH SUPPORT volunteers help to:

- answer technical questions about how to receive the group's messages

- give direct assistance to those who have trouble sending email
commands to the Listserv for altering their "subscription status"

- give advice to outsiders who write into the group who ask about CFS,
health resources on the net, or about this group itself

- give assistance to those who have difficulty editing their messages to
keep quotes brief.

and other technical odds and ends.

Can you help with any of these tasks? If you are able to volunteer for a
day or two a week, or whatever time you can give, then please write to the
Moderation Team by replying to this e-mail, that is, to:

cfs-l-...@maelstrom.stjohns.edu

All of us on the volunteer management team are PWCs as well, and we
understand your needs as they are also our own. But this group is only as
good as we can all make it. If you can help even on a limited basis
please contact us!

Now for Part Two of this special notice:

NEWSGROUP PROBLEMS
READING THE GROUP BY WEB, OR BY E-MAIL

There has been occasional trouble with our gateway between CFS-L and
alt.med.cfs recently, so that those who usually read this group from the
newsgroup side don't always see all messages come through. To see a
current report on the status of message distribution, see the

Newsgroup Status Web Page http://members.aol.com/cfslists/status.htm

This kind of problem happens from time to time. The gateway is
administered outside of the CFS-L management, so we have to depend on
others to get it fixed. We are trying to get a more permanent
improvement.

When these problems occur, there are two alternative ways in which readers
can follow the group: via the web, and by e-mail.

Web access to the group

You can follow the group by our new web interface at

http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/cfs-l.html

Click on the topmost link named "Search the archives" and fill in the
field labelled "Since: ". Be sure to fill in the date in European style
with the day preceding the month, e.g. 7 April.

Optional: You can make the search show fewer messages by filling in other
fields such as Subject: or Sender: or even the "Search for:" general text
field at the top of that web page. The click "Start the search" which
appears towards the bottom of that page.

You will need to use a personal password to gain access to the group's
archives. Instructions for setting a password are provided when you reach
the login page following "Start the search". When you login, it is
possible to have your password stored on your own computer as a "cookie"
so that you will never need to manually log in again.

If you need assistance with this process, write to our Tech Support
volunteers at CFS-L-...@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU .

E-mail access to the group

To follow the group by e-mail (if you don't already do so), you can turn
on the MAIL function of your registration, and also restrict which topics
you receive (which will help minimize the large amount of mail you might
receive). This can be done by sending an e-mail message to the computer
address that controls your registation for this group. OR you can get
assistance with this process by writing to our Tech Support
volunteers at CFS-L-...@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU .

The followng is an example of how to turn on the MAIL function by
yourself. If you do so, you will likely also want to limit your incoming
email messages to a few topics, or only one topic such as MED:. To do so
you can create an e-mail message which says

SET CFS-L MAIL

SET CFS-L TOPICS MED

and send it to the computer address at LIST...@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU .
For further advice about modifying your registration see
http://members.aol.com/cfslists/listhelp.htm or write to our Tech Support
volunteers at CFS-L-...@MAELSTROM.STJOHNS.EDU .

Thanks for your attention!
