-------------
THE CATHEDRAL OF THE MADELEINE was built by Bishop Lawrence Scanlan
(1843-1915), the first bishop of Salt Lake City, on property which he
purchased in 1890 for the sum of $39,000. Catholic Franciscan
missionaries visited the area of what is now Utah in 1776; however, the
first permanent Catholic establishment came in 1866 with the purchase of
property on Second East Street just north of First South Street. There
was built a small church which served Catholics until construction of the
present edifice at East South Temple and "B" Streets. The cornerstone of
the new Cathedral was laid on July 2, 1900. On August 15, 1909, the
church was dedicated to God by James Cardinal Gibbons under the patronage
of St. Mary Magdalene. The architect was C.M. Neuhausen. In 1917, under
the direction of Bishop Joseph M. Glass (1874-1926) it was remodeled and
decorated according to the designs of renowned architect John Comes, to
make it one of the most beautiful churches in this country. Bishop Glass
also changed its name to the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Its fine mural
paintings by Felix Lieftuchter and wood carvings by the William Ross
Company compare favorably with the best in Europe. The stained glass
windows in the body of the Cathedral were made in Munich; those in the
Sanctuary by George Sotter of Pittsburg. The Stations of the Cross were
painted by Robert S. Chase under the direction of Ralph Adams Cram. The
warmth of color adds to the beauty and devotional atmosphere of the
Cathedral and few churches surpass it in the effectiveness of its
interior. April 8, 1970 registered as Utah State Architectural and
historical site. [End]

Peace, and sorry for all the bandwith,

[Original message from Ed Sayre deleted; description of the Cathedral
of the Madeline in Salt Lake City, Utah.]

Thanks for the description of the Cathedral of the Madeline in
Salt Lake, Ed. I take it the renovations or facelift are complete.
I was in Salt Lake for a conference in September 1991, but had to attend
mass in an auditorium because of the renovations. Same thing happened
last week in Chicago; Cardinal Bernardin's cathedral (Holy Name) near the
loop is being renovated. Attending mass in an auditorium gives one an
appreciation of the sterility we would have without the Catholic
imagination that Paul Halsall refers to.
His Peace,
Fred Chavez
