If you go into D&B (e.g. Dialog File 516) you can specify a group of states, a
growth rate in sales (if they were disclosed to D&B), and a minimum sales
level, to keep the set small. D&B records should be viewed as approximations
because in many cases they are unaudited, but it is a starting point. I have
used this technique, for example, to find privately-owned companies with sales
>$20M with growth rates > 10% within a one-hour's drive of Toronto for a
client.
Another way to track growth is by searching the # of employees field.
Of course such a search cannot be a complete one, because of the nature of the
D&B database, but it can provide useful general indications, e.g. what
industries are growing faster than others.
