Anyone heard the upcoming (04/27) release of Hound Dog Taylor's "Release The
Hound" on Alligator? Their web site says it contains previously unreleased
live and studio material. Really love Hound Dog and hope this is a good
one.

Got it a week ago. What can I say about Hound Dog? At his worst
he's still head and shoulders above most of the guys who just try
to do it. He does it.

Granted, he's not my favorite style, but if you gotta rock, damnit do it
right!

If it were Hound Doug Taylor at his best it would obviously have been
released many years ago. These are mostly "live" recordings which capture
what it was like to hear Hound Dog. There are also a few studio recordings
thrown in for measure.

Still the disc is worth while. There's only so much Hound Dog recorded and
so this is very welcom. It's guaranteed to take you back if you heard a
"live" Hound Dog when he was still around. As long as you want a real
"live" sound, you'll like this one. There are some great musical moments,
particularly on "The Dog Meets the Wolf" and "Sen-Sa-Shun."

1. Wild About You Baby - Recorded November 22-24, 1974 at the Smiling Dog
Saloon in Cleveland, Ohio. Classic Hound Dog. Good recording. Stands up
well in the Dog's portfolio.

2. Sen-Sa-Shun - Recorded January 18, 1974 at Northwestern University,
Evanston, Illinois. Dynamite instrumental. Freddie King "borrowed" Mel's
Hideaway from Hound Dog and in this one Hound Dog borrows a great Freddie
tune. Maybe the best cut on the disc.

3. She's Gone - Recorded December 1977 at Harvard University, Cambridge,
Mass. Strong vocal. Introductory banter talks about the Dog driving a John
Deere and B.B. King driving a Farmall tractor. Nice live rendition. Typical
driving beat for the Dog.

4. It Hurts Me Too - Recorded December 1977 at Harvard University,
Cambridge, Mass. Similar to the studio version, but with an extra stinging
slide guitar.

5. What'd I Say - Recorded November 22-24, 1974 at the Smiling Dog Saloon in
Cleveland, Ohio. The studio version is more controlled, but this is more of
a rocker. Guitar has more sting.

6. One More Time - Recorded November 22-24, 1974 at the Smiling Dog Saloon
in Cleveland, Ohio. Wild rockin' recording with an extended play on the
figure known as "shave and a hair cut - two bits." Good selection. The
figure was often heard at the Dog's live performances.

7. Sadie - Recorded November 22-24, 1974 at the Smiling Dog Saloon in
Cleveland, Ohio. Hound Dog opens the tune by confessing that the song is
autobiographical. He says "Sadie didn't do me right." Some new riffs, but
it's impossible to top his version on the "Natural Boogie" album.

8. The Dog Meets the Wolf - December 1977 at Harvard University, Cambridge,
Mass. Okay now this is really different. Nothing in Taylor's prior
recording will quite prepare you for this one. Not duplicated in prior
recordings in any way. The Dog opens with a reference to the juke joint at
Roosevelt and Washtenaw, on Chicago's west side. This tune alone is worth
the price of the disc for its wide open juke joint sound. Hound Dog goes
over the top on this one.

9. Walking the Ceiling - A studio recording recorded either May 25 or June
2, 1971 or maybe September 1973. Different than the prior Alligator release
and believe it or not it's even more energetic. Extended drum solo by Ted
Harvey.

10. Sitting At Home Alone - Recorded November 22-24, 1974 at the Smiling Dog
Saloon in Cleveland, Ohio. Stinging slide guitar work. Okay vocal, but
somewhat strained.

11. Phillips Screwdriver - Another studio recording recorded either May 25
or June 2, 1971 or maybe September 1973. Instrumental features Brewer
Phillip's more traditional style of guitar playing. Still wild juke joint
sound. Hound Dog hollers and backs up his buddy. This is a Brewer Phillips
vehicle.

12. Gonna Send You Back To Georgia - Another studio recording recorded
either May 25 or June 2, 1971 or maybe September 1973. Similar to the
previously released version, but certainly not identical.

13. Things Don't Work Out Right - Recorded November 22-24, 1974 at the
Smiling Dog Saloon in Cleveland, Ohio. This tune stretches-out for almost
11 minutes. At times its almost like Guitar Slim. It's slow and meanders
unlike most of Hound Dog's work. Different than his usual recordings, but
not different from the stuff he did during live shows.

14. See Me in the Evening/It's Alright - Recorded in March 1974 in Sydney
Australia. Another extended tune which has excellant slide guitar work.
It's Alright isn't really a song, its generally some salty banter by the Dog
and the band - something about Vaseline.
