I recommend that anyone thinking of sending recordings to anyone sending
out blanket requests such as this, do a little background work and
contact the person directly to verify their authenticity. I DO NOT mean
to say that this person in particular is anything other that what he
says he is. But there have been reports of people, paricularly in the
former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, using this tactic to get
recordings for free.

BTW, the post I'm referring to was sent to Blues-L by a non-member and I
approved it for the list on the assumption that they are legitimate.
Just do your homework and "buyer beware."

Hi Attilla,
Sounds great.
What is the frequency and call letters of the station? Who is the
general manager? What is the address of the station. Is there a website address for
the station and a webcast of your show we can listen to?

Good advice, Walter. There's a whole crew of folks sometimes referred to as "the promo kings" who use e-mail and mailing lists to launch blanket requests and specific requests to anyone announcing a new CD. Back in the old days, they used to have to write letters so it at least cost them a stamp. Today, it's just another form of spam that can end up costing independent artists serious change. Be especially suspicious when they ask you to mail to a home address rather than a published station address. Like Walter says, do your homework.

Some of the things you should be finding out (hopefully from an independent source).
Station call letters, address, frequency, wattage, and coverage.
Time the show is broadcast.
How long has the show has been on the air?
Where do they report playlists?
Do they have a website?

I know more than a few folks who have sent promos overseas, spending $10/$12 on postage, and never saw any return from it.

One of the best ways to pare your promo list is to keep track of the stations reporting to the Living Blues Radio Poll and keep it to those. Here's a helpful link to check on stations: http://www.radio-locator.com/

As Walter said, I don't know this guy so I'm not meaning to imply anything about him specifically, but please do your homework. It will save you a lot of money and promos.

He linked some videos of his live performances some time back to the pleasure

People should do the same sort of background check before getting
involved in songwriting contests, online "talent contests", or anything
else that requires your time and/or money. Some things may be outright
rip offs, others may be ill-conceived and not worth the effort, and of
course, some may be just what they claim to be. A simple Google search
and some common sense will eliminate the most obvious ripoffs, be sure
to search the "Groups" as well as the web sites. Search for the person's
email address as well as their name and company name. Weight the
investment in time/money against the return and against the perceived
honesty for the company or person you are dealing with. The more they
ask for time/money-wise, the more I'd look into the validity of the
other party.

Anyone can put up a web site and print up convincing looking business
paperwork but they aren't going to go to the trouble unless they expect
get enough out of it to make it worth the effort. Plus the more direct
contact with you, the greater chance they will be arrested for fraud.
Doing things via snail mail brings in the very real laws against mail
fraud. There are less protections with solely online transactions. also
it is harder to do things about ripoffs in other countries.

With a new CD just out, I've been bombarded with requests, especially from
overseas. I don't have the time to check all of them out, so what I've
done, is only send to stations who report to Living Blues except for a few
others which I know and trust. After that, I'll check them out as I get to
them. It took me a long time to compile a list with addresses of the
stations which report to Living Blues. I've joked that I could make more
off selling that list than I could off the CD itself! LOL BTW...if anyone
wants it.... $10 and it's yours!

Dear Walter,
Your comments and advises are truly appreciated. Thanks for keeping up
awarness and caution regarding sending out promo material. I am a Blues-L
member for about 5 years now. Therefore my request is legit and good
willing... The confusion probably has occured becuase I indicated a
different email address. My name is Attila Weinberger - ATTILA The
Transylvanian Guitar Man, president of the 'BlueSylvania' Foundation - the
only organisation in Romania promoting and preserving the Blues and its
related values. I did have 2 nation wide radioshows form 1996 till 2000
for an audience of 5-6 millions weekly. I spent the last 5 years in the
US, touring, recording, teaching... many of the Blues-L members know me or
know of me... After I cut my brand new album in Nashville, TN in Feb 2005
I returned in Bucharest, Romania, where I started all over again the Blues
movement in this country. Since 2005 we had 2 festivals, 1 fundraising
event and we are trying to implement the 'Blues in the Classroom' program
with selected junior high schools. Hopefully this project will shape up in
Sept. 2006. BlueSylvania Foundation is an affiliate member of The Blues
Foundation in Memphis, TN.
Couple of weeks ago this new opportunity came across for me to do a radio
show about and for the Blues. I will relaunch ACADEAUA (Lollypop) starting
the coming Monday. It will be a weekly show on a local channel
(ItsyBitsyRadio, 99.3 FM) for approx. 1,5 million listeners.
It will be a great comeback for the Blues in Romania.
BlueSylvania Foundation is a brave outpost for the Blues, here near the
Black Sea.
I would be greatful if you could endorse my efforts to keep our beloved
music on air in Romania and spread it as much as it possible.
Thanks in advance, best thoughts,
Attila Weinberger

ps: I would love to be able to report to the LivingBlues Magazine...

Your posts to Blues-L have been coming to me for approval. The reason is
that you are signed on to Blues-L as ag...@hotmail.com. I can change
that to in...@AGWEINBERGER.COM or another email address if you would prefer.

I'm sorry I didn't recognize your name, its not like it isn't
distinctive! I fully believe you are exactly who you say you are and
your projects in Romania sound exciting and something the Blues-L
membership should be kept aware of. I'm sure many will want to support
your efforts in the ways they can. A friend of mine in Cairo, GA hires
bands, mostly blues, for fund raising shows for a Romanian orphanage a
couple of times a year. I'm sure he would like to make your aquaintence,
I'll forward your email below to him.

I wish I knew how you go about reporting your radio show to Living
Blues. Maybe somebody else on Blues-L would advise you on how its done.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I thought you were scamming CDs
because I really didn't know anything about you. I tried to make that
clear in my post. I have seen where others have stepped forward on
Blues-L and given you a thumbs up. That seal of approval works for me. I
hope you weren't offended by my comments and maybe this will all come
out for the better, if nothing else the continued discussion brings more
attention to what you are trying to accomplish. I, for one, wish you the
best of luck with the radio show!

Hi
For those of you in the NW area, I am writing a head's
up on the Kinzel & Hyde Band. Ms. Hyde has been
critically ill with a heart and lung condition. She
was released from the hospital yesterday and actually
did a show in SE PDX! She has missed several shows
during the past months because of her health problems,
and Mr Kinzel has been holding it down for the entire
band. They (Kinzel & Hyde) played a benefit for the
Kelso/Longview/Kalama THESPIANS-SummerStage and helped
us raise over $5,000.00 for our program....they are
extremely generous people.

If you have not heard this husband'wife team, you owe
it to yourselves to do so. There are many acts around
with a fine sound, but this one is not only a great
sounding act, they are great folks with a real sense
of community.

Their web site is http://www.kinzelandhyde.com and I
am sure that Ms. Hyde would like to receive any well
wishes any of you would care to send along.

Stu and Lynn are true treasures here in Portland.
Lynn champions the blues as well as other causes
tirelessly. Her love of the community is endless.
Stu is one of the most amazing guitar players around.
Definately check them out and keep Lynn in your thoughts.

I'll add that, although I realize that I shouldn't make such gender
qualifications, Lynn is one of the best female harp players I've ever
heard. I can't think of many harp players, male or female, who can nail
the Sonny Boy #2 style as well as she can.

I'm sending positive vibes her way.

Lyn (this is the way she spells her name when we communicate) and Stu are
highly cherished for their roles in the Portland music scene. They have a
true love for all roots music, the blues in particular. Not only have they
continuously supported bringing music into the schools and contributed to
countless benefits, both mostly without accepting payment, they hold two
jams every week, one acoustic and one electric, where they do not judge
people on how well developed a musician somebody is, rather offerring those
people the opportunity to learn by directly playing with recognized artists.

I consider both to be good friends and wish nothing but the best for Lyn at
all times as I know she has suffered a great deal with her illnesses for
some time now. Recently they asked me to shoot some promotional photographs
for them. I told them anytime, just give me a call and I would be there for
them. Lyn said she wanted "something to show how I look now as I am not the
attractive young thing I once was." I can only hope that if we do get to
this photo shoot, whatever shots we do take it brings out the heart of this
amazing entertainer.

If you're at the Waterfront Blues Festival, head over to the
Education/Workshop Stage. It is easy to find, right behind the big red
double decker bus belonging to Ethos. Lyn runs this stage almost the entire
festival, unless of course she is performing. Drop by and say hi to her. I
promise she won't bite, at least not hard.

All my best to Lyn and Stu!

Greg
