I got to thinking about how many blues clubs have
had "cool names" over the years...like these:

*The Wiggle Inn (N'awlins?)
*Henry's Swank Club (ask John Lee)
*The Fickle Pickle (Chicago)
*Dan Electro's (Houston)
*The Slippery Noodle (Indiana...of all places)

One of my favorites was (is?) a place called the Brokedown Palace. Named
after a Grateful Dead song apparently, but a great blues clup -in the middle
of nowhere - Washburn, Wisconsin. The name fitted to condition of the large
old building - formerly a movie theatre called The Palace, I think.

Chuck, you bring back good memories to this ol bluesman.
I played a "3.2 joint" in Sedalia, Mo. many years ago. The
name of the place was: "Wiggle In" Believe me, my friend,
this roadhouse lived up to its name. On a Sunday afternoon
it was all a man could do, to get inside the door ... with many
of the jammers dancing on the sidewalk in front. There was
hardly any interference from the locals police, for the seldom
frequited

of the patrons dancing on the sidewalk in front. There was
hardly any interference from the locals police, for they seldom
frequented this area, unless they were traveling in "fours".
One of the places that I cut my teeth in, was a club called:
"I Like It Like That" (Marshall, Mo.), also the infamous "Paradise
Inn" (Slater, Mo.) These old sway-back tar papered shacks weren't
culture centers, yet there were many lessons learned there that I
have carried for a life time. Cheap port was the drink of choice.
At midnight the devil was unchained, the groove was set with
everything turning to pure magic. Just the way it was.

I read a review recently of new words spawned by computer use. One term I
really liked was the measure of time known as the "ohnosecond". It is the
length of time it takes to hit the wrong button and realize what you've
just done...

There was a place in Pensacola that I used to hang out in during the
early to mid seventies called "The Garden of Earthly Delight". They
threw great free Sunday afternoon parties with food and free beer. The
music ranged from rock to blues to country but was always fun.
One Sunday a blind friend of mine went to the Garden with me and we
played some darts. He was pretty good, you just had to give him an extra
dart for a first throw to get his bearings. The dart board was located
on a jog in the wall a few feet from the band. You can guess what
happened. My friend missed with his 'line up' dart. He missed the board
and the wall but he managed to stick it in the head stock of the bass.
That was the end of darts that day. Then he wanted to drive my car...

P.W. I do believe you might be onto something there..as I was going by
recall when I posted those club names. It just seemed that I could
recall his emphasis on the SWANK
club...but I guess that could have been SWING instead.
I think SWANK was a trashy (probably collectible) mens "adventure"
magazine from the 6O's...that I AM sure of..:)

,,when I read the previous posting it brought back memories of an underaged
visit over 30 years ago to the above mention establishment also fondly
known as "The Wiggle Inn, Wobble Out". While visiting the joint that day,
sad to say there was no music but I did see the town only pimp chased into
the women's bathroom by several well-armed men. Thank God for open windows
in unairconditioned building.

Add these clubs of confused ehtnicity:

Guido Murphy's (Connecticut)
Jose Muldoon's (Colorado Springs)

And one I like (maybe a good name for a band, too):

Jump Steady (Buena Vista, CO)

maxdog, I love your friend ... sounds like my kind of people. And hey,
if the bass player cant take it, send him home; there are only about 20
more standing around the corner, (not meaning to offend the many great
bassmen of the world) Having spent the weekend with Robbie Laws, and
his bass player (Pat Counts) .. we have had a blast. Course we all know
what you call a bass player without a girlfriend? -- homeless! ;-)
And thats the way it goes ... ! Sorry for the rambling .. things are a
little
slow here in central Missouri tonight.

We talkin bout the same club? If you saw some fat cops in the back room
with chicken grease drippin down their shirts, huggin on some momma's,
with the lights suddenly coming on at 12 am, it's the same place. Course
there was "Nat's Place" just down the street, with a blind man shooting
craps, that took everyones dust. I swear that man could see, but I have
looked him dead in the eye, he never blinked. Love them ol blues clubs.
BTW -- wasnt the "Fickle Pickle" club the one that was started by Mike
Bloomfield? Apple juice was served neat or on ice. What you put with it,
was your business.

For those of you that are going to the North Atlantic Blues Festival
and/or the Poconos Blues Festival, let's get organized. I was talking to
BARRY SILVERBERG and he mentioned that a few of you were interested in
getting together like we did last year.
Yes neither of these sites are the offical blues-l convention site for
this year but it doesn't change the fact that a bunch of us will be
going to these fesitvals either.
The main purpose behind this is so we can get some of the benefits that
come from being an organized group. I thought I heard mention lobster or
clambake for a large enough group up there in Maine.
We don't have Barry to get this rolling, so I'm going to try to get the
ball rolling(oh, cliché).
So let's get going on this.
