In recognition of today's U.S. independence celebrations, I hand picked
5 vids that, I think, represent a sampling of this America's greatest
gift to the world, (Blues music). So, as Michael Bloomfield said, "if
you love these blues, play 'em as you please".

In the YouTube clip, Delaney Bramlett says "...I turned Eric (Clapton) onto
people like Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf - all that stuff."

Sounds a bit strange. as I understand that Delaney Bramlett met Eric Clapton
in 1969. I think he'd been "turned onto" them before then...

Maybe he meant to say Howard Dunston
(he's a NYC turned Louisiana guitar slinger who's proclaimed to me
that he followed Clapton with Bonnie & Delaney's band)

Yes, Slowhand no doubt, was already "turned onto" RJ, Wolf etc no later
than the mid 6tees, cuz he recorded their music on the Mayall
Bluesbreaker album, and the Yardbirds recorded Muddy's music. He, also,
(of coarse) backed up Sonny Boy2 in '64-'65w/ the Ybirds?? I think Eric
was into American Blues before he hit puberty.
Delaney was maybe a little bothered by the fact that the Brits thought
that music came from Eric. He should have said he turned Eric on, to
turn the Brits on to where it came from, which he of coarse did.
But...it's no secret that Eric patterns is vocal style after Delaney.
Listen to them, they sound very much the same. Of coarse I'm sure Eric's
fans think it's the other way around.
Yea, Eric credits Delaney for giving him the courage to front his own
band and just play what he wants to play.

I remember reading or hearing somewhere that Delaney wrote Superstar
with Leon Russell. It was actually Bonnie that wrote it with Leon.
I'd love to see them get back together again (musically), even for one
tour and maybe a cd.

In my book ("Between Midnight and Day"), I have a Clapton chapter and tell
the story of how Al Wilson and I went to see Cream play in Boston. Then Al went
home and I went to Eric's room at the Somoset Hotel with a reel to reel of
'all' of the Robert Johnson including the alternate tracks and unissued songs.

We listened to it until dawn while he played along with the tape. Then I left
him my copy of the tape which he took back to England and made dubs for Keith
Richards, Jeff Beck, Terry Reid and many others.

The first RJ on Columbia came out in 1962. The other tracks were not released
until around 1970.

Eric was deeply into Robert Johnson, Son House, Skip James and those players
long before he ever met Delaney.

Absolutely. Delaney was talking off the top of his head.

HOWEVER, Delaney Bramlett is absolutely responsible for turning Eric onto playing funkier, AND
pretty much taught him how to sing and to have confidence in it.

I am a big Delaney fan. His CD Sounds From Home from a few years back is smokin. His voice is as
good or better than it ever was.

A good book showing where Delaney fits in Clapton's word is the Layla book. Actually it shows more where Leon Russell influenced Clapton's world, at least indirectly. A good but slightly inaccurate read about the making of that classic rock album. Bobby Whitlock's great song "A Thorn Tree In The Garden" is about a dog. There, I gave away the ending ;-)

So is there any material from Robert Johnson that hasn't been released yet?

Well Lockwood did credit Mr. Downchild to Johnson if I recall, and we know from Lockwood and
Johnny Shines that when Johnson busked he played songs like "Shine On Harvest Moon" and other
pop songs of the day. If you are looking for more recordings, well that I can't help you with.

It's possible there are more lost recordings out there, as there were
additional takes of songs, but nobody has recovered them yet. There is one
alternate take of "Travelin' Riverside Blues" discovered in '98 not on the
Robert Johnson Complete boxed set that is included on newer copies of King
of the Delta Blues Singers.
