Can anyone tell me of more examples of a bo(e) hog in lyrics? Can anyone
tell me what one is? Barbara Carr had a song called the "Bo Hawk (sic)
Grind" on her previous record. She sang "hawg," but the listing
erroneously read "hawk." Anyhow, what makes a hog a bo hog?

Defined in the book " Juba to Jive" by Clarence Major..... in the 1930's and 40's "hog" meant
to cast a spell, especially an evil one.

I don't know if this is the meaning mean't in the song but ........

Here's what Mose Allison said about Bo' Hogs in a recent
BLUES ACCESS interview:
<<"I've got a blues line that I consider the
quintessential blues line, that nobody can identify. I
heard it on the jyuck box in Tippo, Mississippi, and I
think it was a woman. I suspect that it was Memphis
Minnie. But nobody's ever been able to identify this
thing for sure, and I've talked to blues scholars and
blues men — B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Junior Lockwood
and all these people. Most of them have heard the line,
but none of them remember who did it. Now the line is:
'Papa's in the jailhouse, Mama's drinkin' wine, sister's
on the corner doin' the bo'-hog grind.' The bo'-hog
grind, man, that's where it's at, that's the whole damn
thing, right there. You got to be a country boy to know
what the bo'-hog grind is, anyhow. I told John Lee
Hooker one time, 'Man, I saw you doin' the bo'-hog grind
on The David Letterman Show,' and it broke him up.>>

There is a Blind Boy Fuller tune titled "Stealing
Bo-Hog."

A Southernism I've often heard is "boar hog" which distinguishes a male
from a female hog, known as a sow. Boars are nasty critters, put off some
fairly pungent odors from scent glands, and have pretty much one thing on
their minds. The Bo' Hog Grind is not just a tune in *their* minds...
