Longtime Living Blues writer Peter Aschoff died in the early morning of
February 15 after suffering a heart attack at home. He was only 52. A native
of Iowa, Peter was an instructor in the Department of Sociology and
Anthropology at the University of Mississippi, where he taught a popular
course on the blues. He had worked regularly with Living Blues since 1983,
when the magazine was relocated from Chicago to the Center For the Study of
Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi.

There will be a funeral home visitation on Monday, February 17 from 4 -- 6 pm
at Waller Funeral Home in Oxford, located at 419 Highway 6 West.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday at the new Chapel on the
campus of the University of Mississippi, located across the street from both
the Sociology/Anthrology Department and the offices of Living Blues.

Letters of sympathy can be sent to Peter's wife Patricica and son Edward at:
101 County Road 102, Oxford, MS 38655

Peter will be greatly missed.

Sad news indeed.

I had the opportunity in the past year twice to meet and spend a little time with
Peter Aschoff (at two blues symposiums, one in Jonesboro Arkansas and the other
in Helena, Arkansas).

I found him to be one of the most engaging lecturers on blues that I've ever
heard. Years previously, I had been involved in the production of a 6-part radio
documentary of the blues, and Peter was one of the most valuable of all our
interviewees.

He had a wonderful knack of presenting his learning in a very down-home,
personable manner, and he had a wonderful feel for the blues in both its music
and cultural contexts.

He will be missed.

Sadly,

I'm sorry to hear about the premature death of Mr.
Aschoff of Living Blues magazine. His writings have
often been instructive over the years: wisely serving
not only consumers (through his reviews of blues
records), but also in enlightening students and fans
of the music. He will be missed.

Rest In Peace.
