Yeah,

I voted this past election like my life depended on it. It was the first time I voted since McGovern. A smug satisfaction in knowing I voted the right way for a weak candidate, both times.

The problem is just as bad in Congress, but boning up on your representatives' record and ideology is a daunting task that few 'Mercans feel they have time for.

My Martini therapy really means a cocktail at the end of a day or on a holiday. Add up all those supposedly cheap ways you mentioned and I couldn't afford them all... luckily, I'm also a great cook that can turn scraps of barely edible items into amazingly tasty dishes.

I'm all heart.... which probably contributes to my odd shape.

I watched a George Carlin marathon the other night and i decided George has it figured out...we the people elect these sorry politicians so it is our fault things are the way they are....like Mr. Carlin I've decided NOT to vote, that way we can't be blamed for all the bad things our leaders do.

Beardo, that is the sign of a good cook, utilizing leftovers and turning them into a great meal, also to be able to make good soups and sauces.

Chefo, you're right, of course....however, like a dishwasher trying to make
a good sauce because the cook got drunk and didn't show up, sometimes (like
with our current foreign policy wrecks) after testing the sauce, everyone
who dared to taste it jumps back with a discusting look on their face,
wondering aloud, "What the f**k is it?"

Which is pure bullshit. Why doesn't George get off his ass and do
something? He gets plenty of material from bad politicians so maybe that's
part of his plan.

I'm breaking my self-imposed silence on things political on blues-l.

"I didn't vote for anyone so I'm not responsible" is the same excuse Pontius
Pilate used when he washed his hands and gave the decision to execute Jesus
to the mob. Instead of the preacher of peace, they chose to free the
murderer.

First, if you don't vote you don't have a right to complain if things go
wrong. The "I didn't vote for him" excuse only works if you actually voted
for someone else. Not voting abdicates your responsibility-not right, not
privilege- to ensure that the government functions according to your wishes
and reflects the priorities of the majority of the people.

Second, even if you can't find anyone to vote for, you should be able to
find someone to vote against. This rule has served me pretty well over the
years.

Back to the blues please. I know, politics gives most of us the blues but it has little to do with blues music except in the way life in general has to do with blues.

Carlin's contention is we have a "mock democracy" (dee-MOCK-ass-ie) where big money interest decided who's on the ballot and are all working for the same people. The voting is just to give us the illusion of "being in charge" when we all don't really have any say, we are just being manipulated. Carlin uses comedy as a vehicle to make points that would inflame a lot of people when in fact they are either true or near true.

s

alright, i dropped it....watch more Carlin he says it all way better than i ever could. i did put the NBC

Ricky is right. If you're a person who is too lazy to drive down the
street and cast a vote which takes less than a minute then you have no
right to bitch.

If you want change go out and fucking do something. Vote, run for office
but don't bitch to ME if you haven't even made an effort to be part of the
political process.

George Carlin is a comedian. Occasionally he is funny (much more
frequently funny when he was younger). Occasionally he has some clever
insights. But don't take your political philosophy from some comedian.
It's easy to sit on the side and comment satirically on how screwed up
things are. But don't take Carlin as a guide for how to think and act
politically!

I'd rather have someone in charge like AL GORE -- not funny, and in fact
susceptible to being made fun of, 'cuz he's so sober and serious. But
smart, competent, takes the time to do his friggin' homework before he
opens his mouth.

So laugh with Carlin ... but vote for (and get involved in the campaigns
of) politicians who can make a difference!

-Steve Hoffman (stepping down from soap-box) (hey I even find Andrew
Dice Clay funny, but I don't use him as a guide to male-female relations!)

For me, the most most important reason to vote is that they let me do
it. I've used Ricky's selection method pretty often.

I tend to agree with you. If you pay taxes, if you live in this country, if
you are a citizen or resident of the US and therefore are considered by the
world as part of this country and what it does in the world, you have a
right to complain.

ie, "Use it or lose it!" I think it's amazing we can still vote. It's
fear on both sides of the aisle that keeps it in place. Both parties need
a way to get or stay in power and going to the people for votes is the only
nonviolent way to do it. And if they want the votes, they have to
occasionally take everyone's temperature and keep a promise or two if they
want to get re-elected. So voting does work, just not as good as we'd
like. It's getting harder to be a George Carlin fan; he's getting weirder
as he gets older. Sorry about the NBC...

I'm of the "Hold Your Nose And Vote" school...I call it renewing my right to bitch. The last two Presidential elections left me wishing for a third party.

I'm baffled why the American people aren't using there impeachment
powers to stop this administration NOW, before any more damage is done.
Bush makes Nixon look like Mother Teressa!
If this were Italy, WW 2, Bush, Cheny and Rumsfeld would be strung up
for all to see, just like Benito Mouselinni.
Yea, I voted and look what happened. Every one I know did not vote for
this Maniac but it still happened. It's hard for me to believe there
are that many naive voters. Phony vote counting in Fla, where Jeb Bush
is Gov, Kathryn Harris being another Bush bimbo. It all stinks to high
heaven.
I hope to God Jeb doesn't run! If that happenes, I'm moving to Austrailia.

Not in defense of Gov. Bush..just the facts.
In Broward County (FL) the then-new Commissioner Of Elections, as was her right, threw out her predecessors' cronies and installed her own. (They also moved several poling places). The problem was the old help was ousted BEFORE the new folks were trained in the "nuts-and-bolts" of the polling process. The result was "cluster-love" of the first order. The saddest part of the deal is that the newbies were of the Democrat persuasion.
