Is anybody still here? Is anybody else thinking/wondering about Bill Wax?
I know this day(s) in blues history is important, whoever was born/died
on this day is important, what songs DJs are playing in various markets
throughout the states is also equally important, but what about the future
history of the blues, is that important too? In my opinion and the opinions of
almost everyone I know that loves/respects and listens to the blues past
and present, Bill Wax has been one of the best voices of the blues world and
a walking encyclopedia of blues knowledge and he has educated so many
blues lovers I know for many years on XM and later SiriusXM Bluesville. One of
the few guys who even bothered to actually pronounce the names of the
artists we love correctly on top of everything else. And then I get the email
last week in a blues newsletter about some health issues and leaving (or
being fired?) from the best blues radio show in the world today,
how/what/why????? His interviews with BB King and other artists like Janiva Magness
were legendary, beautiful, insightful, soulful, honest, and heartfelt. I
turn on channel 70 Bluesville all weekend and there's just a dead empty void,
no announcements, no DJs, no nothing. Did Stern take all the money from
the other channels and leave them out to dry? What the hell gives???? I
tried to email Bill and his email is dead, it feels like the end of an era and
the death of blues radio as we know it. Ok just wanted to vent and
looking for answers, if anyone knows anything, feel free to post something,

Bill and Sirius/XM just weren't "on the same
page" from what Bill told me. He does have some
health stuff, but the problem at root appears to
have been about music. It is surprising that his
shift now just goes unhosted, but I imagine that
will change at some point. His interviews with B
and Buddy among others are certainly wonderful. I
hope they will still play them from time to time.
I don't think Howard Stern has anything directly
to do with it, but let's face it - that show
(aarg...), and sports and such, is what keeps
satellite radio going, not most of the music
channels, such as blues, jazz, or "Willie's
Roadhouse" (which plays great country from the
1950s-1970s from the likes of Ernest Tubb that
isn't on radio elsewhere) - the stuff folks like
us like! It will be interesting to see how Bluesville evolves now.

I've been wondering about this "not on the same page about the music".

Bill Wax is Prez of the Blues Foundation for gods sake...what more of a
blues expert could they possibly want? I worry that they are gonna cut the
blues channel all together.

"Blues expert" may or may not be what is desired.
It's far bigger than just satellite radio . . .
"blues" is more of a marketing concept and an
"imaging" thing than a form of music, as shown by
the House of Blues. Plus, even on this list,
there is considerable variation about what is
"blues" or what is "good blues" or "real blues"
and there have been differing opinions about what
is on the satellite radio channel. For many who
are not in the inner group of blues enthusiasts,
the only major importance of blues is its role in
rock. The blues may have begotten rock, but it
has the role of the poor stepchild in the
commercial world or corporate rock. For most of
us, blues has a deep importance of its own, but
in the cold reality of commerce, blues, and jazz
too, are more useful as labels than actual music. :-(

Jay is Prez & CEO...I mis-spoke. Bill is Chairman of the Board of Directors....kinda Jay's boss because Jay serves at the pleasure of the board.

Sorry to hear about Bill's departure.
He apparently still sits on the Blues Foundation BoD, (Jay Sieleman is the President and CEO unless something has changed very recently).

The Blues Foundation Board voted to change the title within the past year. Previously, Jay was executive director and Bill was President of the board.

To make the titles more closely match common usage, they were changed. Bill is now Chairman of the Board and Jay is President-Chief Executive Officer.

I still refer to them as Bill and Jay.

on the Sirrus BB King channel recently I have heard Travis Tritt, Cactus
and Pat Travers I did not enjoy it - sometimes it's great sometimes it
not. I am on a new car trial subscription and will not renew.

First and foremost, Sirius is a business. I have great respect for Bill, but
"The Future of the blues" doesn't lie in any one man's hands.

To the best of my knowledge, Bill is still a member of Blues-L and unless he's taking a major vacation from all things computer-related, he will read these messages, and hopefully respond. One of the local club owners told me "think Clear Channel" about the changes taking place at Sirius/XM and what Bill meant about "going in opposite directions." I'm hoping to see Bill at the Pennsylvania Blues Festival at the end of July. Hope he's doing well and taking care of himself. He's a good guy!

I already miss Bill on Bluesville. I'm not sure that the corporation can
replace him. I'm less sure that they even want to, and that is disturbing.
Jonny's observations are well-taken.

As program director, Bill set the tone for the channel and while I didn't
like all of it (see Leonard's comments and listen to night-time
programming), I have learned about new artists and music from Bill, and even
new-to-me music from old artists. I really appreciate that. Bill's
interviews were always special. (I hope I can buy the BB series someday) I
don't listen a lot because I only have access in my car, but I had come to
expect to hear something from Bill that would "stick" with me as I ran
errands daily. I've recently renewed my subscription so I'll see how it
plays out. I'm also considering a new car for which satellite radio is a
$760 option. My neglected cd collection may be getting a lot more play time
in the future.

Anyway, Bill seems to be comfortable with his decision and that is good
enough for me. I wish him the best and look forward to hearing from him in
the future.

Thank you for the voice of taste and reason. I have the opportunity to hear this channel only when I am in my father's car. He believes he is doing me a favor by tuning to Bluesville.

BUT

90% of what I hear there is horrid rock. It is so bad that I tend to think the 10% of the programming that happens to be blues happens by accident.

amen Tom.....I hate to say it but just because an individual is on the Blues Foundation Board hardly makes them an expert on anything. Have you followed the BMA'S for the last few years? I like Bill a lot and have enjoyed his company anytime I have seen him. I hate to speculate on what happened but no matter what happened I wish Bill all of the best he is a great, sincere guy with a real love for the music .

I'm with you in everything you write, Scott. I'm sure Bill is a great guy, and even if he weren't, I hate to see people out of work on short notice. There's no, repeat, no ill will on my part.
