While I am not an expert in the bylaws of The Blues Foundation and I don't
pretend to know what people are thinking, I thank that when an organization
"sponsors" an artist that comes from outside their organization or (for lack of
a better word) geographic vicinity it goes contrary to the "spirit" of a
program involving regional affiliates... Two years ago the band that won the
UJBN competition also won ANOTHER local society's competition and opted to go
under their banner because the money for travel was better.
While I always welcome the opportunity for deserving talent to get their
rightful recognition, I think Jay and The Blues Foundation really needs to take
a look at tightening up the rules and reg's surrounding how affiliates and
their bands operate in future IBC's.

I dont know why the Blues Foundation would have cared who sponsored Joey or
anyone for that matter, just as long as the Society is a real functioning
organization, which by looking at the Blues Society of Taiwan's web site-
they look legit

When The Suncoast Blues Society receives these requests, we always tell
them that we only support our own member bands, and not many of them! The
only official entrant we've had is The Damon Fowler Group in 2004
We had also agreed to support Dr. Slide in 2004, and he IS a member, but
he gained support from a European society.
We've had the opposite kind of problem, really. Many of our local bands
have A) Steady gis or B) rotating personnel, both of which make it
difficult for them to commit.

I believe a site where we could all discuss and exchange information that all blues societies can benefit from. Also there always seem to be problems with-in society's of one sort of another and it would be helpful to have other blues society people around the country to aid with ideas on how to handle these problems. I'm sure most of us have similar problems to some degree or another. Something set up on the Foundation site would be easy for everyone to find and access. There are plenty of times i wish i had someone outside the local blues society to confer with on various issues .

Steve and others,
I like the idea of some sort of info exchange where Societies can look and see how other folks do the same stuff. There are plenty of topics.
I have just recently been talking with other Blues Societies about the value of doing this.
If anyone has topics/questions where it would be helpful to find out how other Blues Societies do things, please let me know. You do not need to go into financial details but a procedure woulod be helpful.
I plan on bringing this to the Blues Foundation and maybe a place on the website can serve to assist.

I feel we will see some changes and "tightening up" of the rules next IBC. I'd like to say that our own dealings with Jay and the Foundation have always been upbeat and positive. I'm sure that this particular snafu will not only be corrected but will benefit everyone in the end. I have the utmost confidence in Jay and the Blues Foundation. Also I'd like to discuss ideas with other blues societies on or off list on different ways to run the local competitions. In the past we've gone conventional with all the bands coming in on a weekend and having a competition based as closely as we can to the Foundation's format. This year we're thinking of spreading it out over several weeks, possibly having bands for the competition featured at our weekly jams. After which we'll pick out several for a head to head final competition. We strive for local bands. We promote bands and musicians that are members of the society. I'm not sure if it is mandatory that bands in the competit
ion be
blues society members but i believe all have been to date.

You could also set up something very quickly and easily via Yahoo groups or the new Google groups. They are really easy to work with, you can restrict or moderate access, and the Yahoo groups have a built in database that is cool.
