Well....we've lost another one of the greats in 1997.

I have just received word of the passing today of Fenton Robinson from
contacts at Alligator Records.

No specific details were given, but he was believed to have been in
Springfield, IL. where he has been
living at the time of his death.

It is unclear at this time whether his recent health battle with a brain
cancer affliction was the cause.

If you hear or see any more information on this before it is generally
available in the mainstream press I'd appreciate hearing from you.

For those of you who never got to see him play, his title as the "mellow
blues genius" is an understatement.
And as a person he was perhaps one of the most modest, unassuming and
deeply introspective people I have
met in my days.

From his early days....playing guitar on the "original" version of "Texas
Flood" (1958) to his now classic
Alligator recordings to more recent projects, he had that indelible
trademark sound and style that truly
signifies what being a "blues master" is all about.

He will be missed.

Fenton was living in Rockford, IL. The last information I had was that he was
at Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was recovering from a stroke and additional
brain surgery for cancer. He was awaiting transfer to a nursing home.
I had a chance to hear Fenton when he played the last time here at the Big
Cities Lounge. He certainly was a gentleman. He was very low key. It was a
pleasure spending the little time a did with him. I was hoping he would
recover and play again. He will be missed.

Whoa. This is sad news. One of my favorites was "I Hear Some Blues
Downstairs" and as Marty noted it was Fenton's guitar behind Larry Davis
in
the original Duke recording of "It's Flooding Down in Texas."

It's a shame. Maybe now he'll find out if he can hear some blues
upstairs.

The blues is something ... hard to get acquainted with, just like death.

1997 seems to be full of bad news about some my alltime heroes. Fenton
Robinson, Luther Allison & Junior Wells
have allways been on top of my alltime favourits. For the past two years I
have been covering "You don't know what love is" by Fenton Robinson. I will
have my troubles singing it at my next gig!!! It's going to be an emotional
gig!

Carl Wyatt

PS. Any idea how Junior Wells is doing these days?

Not a great time to ask this, but not a bad time, either:

Which of Fenton's Alligator and later discs do people recommend?
Reviews seem to be hard to come by and/or spotty.

my 1985
pilgrammage to Chicago, and I'v enjoyed listening to him since the late 70s.
Though
some found his jazzy style not to their liking, I always found his playing (and
singing)
a real treat. Fenton Robinson is one of a kind, and no one else sounds quite
like him.

His first Alligator is a classic "Somebody Loan Me a Dime", but they are
all very good. On "I Hear Some Blues downstairs" is what I consider
the best, most beautiful version of "As the Years go Passing By".
Don't forget his early work on Duke and there is some fine Fenton on P-Vine.
I also like "Special Road" very much. I think it was re-issued on Evidence.

Altho I haven't heard it, I've heard very good things about the album he
cut for the European (Dutch?) label Black Magic, which IMO has an
excellent track record of producing high-quality, authentic blues ....
Any 'zellers comment on the Fenton Robinson CD on Black Magic

A classic gem, that will be missed.
