Blues singer Buddy Ace, whose real name was Johnny Lee Land,
suffered a heart attack while performing at a Waco club
Saturday night. Born in Jasper, Texas on November 11, 1937,
he was the son of singer and guitarist Johnny Ace. He was
slated to play with B.B. King, Bobby Blue Bland and others
next year. His new album, a tribute to Mr. Bland, will be
released in January, as planned.

Has anyone else noted the historical irony that Buddy Ace died in the
same state (Texas) on the same day (Christmas Eve) forty years after his
namesake Johnny Ace?

This is incorrect; Johnny Ace [John Alexander] himself was born in
1929, and played piano, not guitar. Buddy Ace's connection with Johnny Ace
was that after Ace's death in 1954, Duke Records owner Don D. Robey got
Johnny's brother St Clair to continue from where Johnny left as Buddy Ace,
but he soon got tired and the name of Buddy Ace was adopted by Johnny (Jimmy?)
Lee Land.

Eric,

You were not the first to point out that much of that info
was incorrect. Fortunately, I can blame it all on the AP
story that I pulled it from ;-) I'm not familiar with
either Johnny or Buddy Ace.

I don't know how they managed to get the info
so screwed up, though, because it appeared as if they spoke
with his agent and, possibly, someone from the family.
