Copyright is automatically lost when something is broadcast on public TV? Did
you learn that in school today or did the Tooth Fairy leave a note under your
pillow?

Your understanding needs to come into the real world. YouTube does not have
the capabilities (or any serious intentions) of policing themselves.
I'm with Richard Pelletier on this one. You're all junkies hooked on music
that you haven't seen before and you can't get enough of it.
You're happy to ignore copyright law so you can view legends that are long
dead. Your need to feed your pleasure overwhelms any legal conscience.
You plead, "I'd never see this wonderful music if somebody didn't make it
available for me." So you can't get enough Cab Calloway or Nina Simone or Freddie
King even though some inner voice tells you that copyright theft is happening
and you're a part of it, Mister Jones . . .

You hit it dead on. Youtube is like the thief who breaks into the store
during a riot and leaves the doors open. The people viewing and downloading
videos are the people who walk in afterwards and take things.

The fact remains that if Youbube attracts advertising revenue -- and it
does -- the attraction is there because of the artists' material. Youtube
would not exist without the material, so the artists should be compensated
for making Youtube a viable business. But it would be a shame if the price
structure made it difficult to continue the "viral" spreading of such great
content. It is what makes the Internet such a great medium. I'd hate to see
it suddenly controlled by a few wealthy corporations who can afford the
costs, the way other media are. And you can bet there is intense pressure
to have it go that way. So it will take great thought and pressure from many
groups to work this out without destroying what is great about the Internet.

There is nothing wrong with me or anybody else being exposed to new material of any sort and
you’re being pretty pompous making fun of the fact that it’s happening, Dick. Sorry, unlike you I
wasn’t born 30-40 years sooner. Many of these people were past their prime when I saw them in
person so being able to see a video clip on YouTube and KNOWING I can BUY ......I’ll repeat
that ...BUY the DVD is good for all involved.
This whole “YouTube sucks” thread is flame bait because I posted a Little Milton. Some of us must
be bored.

Even though no one is selling anything on youtube (not directly, that I can
tell), it wouldn't surprise
me (at all) to learn that there have been more CD sales as a result of
people viewing videos--than there have been sales lost. I know that's how
it has unfolded in my particular case (but then again, I am nopt selling
videos either).

Dude, it takes no energy. It's a discussion. I was just stating an opinion.
I'm not concerned about it. I use Youtube. In fact, at the current time I
don't know of a more useful site for a blues player. I never said anything
about clarity. When blues videos are released, I buy them.
Still, you have to recognize Youtube for what it is. It's a thieves market,
with willing accomplices on both sides. You can't defend someone copying a
dvd and uploading parts of it no matter how you try to justify it. However,
when it used for what it is intended for, there is nothing better out there.
Look at Adam Gussow's homemade videos for an example of the best that
Youtube has to offer. They are brilliant, legal, and uploaded by the person
who made them.
If anyone feels like ripping me off, the videos featuring a few of the DBS
artists are up on youtube under my user name of cnevitt. Have at it, you no
good cold blooded thievin' scofflaws. Please.
Then, if the guilt ever does start to take over take you, feel free to visit
www.BluesShirts.com and purchase one OR more of the newly arrived re-order
of I IV V tshirts. (they're a little harder to download). chuck

They compress the hell out of the video files in order to speed things
up on download streaming. That degrades the quality. It's lossy. But of
course, good quality input means mediocre quality output, bad quality
input mean really crappy output.
