In 1982, Red moved to Europe and stayed there for 9 years, performing and
touring over 300 nights a year with his bands, "The Amsterdam Allstars" and
"The Internationals." He also worked as a sideman for 2 great blues legends,
Memphis Slim and Champion Jack Dupree.
Red returned to the U.S. in the early 90s and in 1994 formed "Red Archibald
and The Internationals." He performed hundreds of shows/year until several
serious illnesses slowed him down several years ago (more on that in the
original obit below.) Even while slowed by his health problems Red was recently
awarded Bay Area harp player of the year by The Bay Area Blues Society (I
think that was 2005.)
Prominent musicians that Red has played and performed with include: Memphis
Slim, Champion Jack Dupree, Elvin Bishop, Gatemouth Brown, Coke Escovedo,
Luther Tucker, Sonny Rhodes, Taj Mahal and numerous others. His first album (he
had several) featured the great guitarist, Ronnie Earl. Red's albums
included mostly his own songs and arrangements.
Red was not married and is survived by his teenage daughter, Kenzie
Archibald, brother Bruce Archibald, half-sister Melissa and his aunt Betty Archibald.
I have old publicity photos forwarded to me by Raymond Victor, a
pianist/singer who played with Red and knew him well. I will forward those to you
separately.
I'd appreciate it if you'd say something about this special
musician/performer in the obituaries and on the radio station's blues progams. Thank you.
