My information is several years old, but I recall that Mt. Sunapee (a
state-run ski area in central NH) had a rather extensive program for
skiers who were blind. I remember skiing there several times and seeing
folks who were blind, along with guides, running gates.

Howdy,

I'm posting this query for a friend with no net access.

He is looking for hardward and software to modify a PC for use by his
legally blind father. He is looking for something which would read text
(including pull-down menus, etc.), announce keys, etc.

Can anybody point me at some sources? I'll forward them to my friend.

Thanks!

John,
The Vermont Adaptive Ski & Sports (VASS) at Mt. Ascutney
(Exit 8 off I-91) has an excellent and inexpensive program for many
disabilities, including skiing for the blind. Their phone # is 802-484-7711.
Ask for VASS.

Another Look At COMPUSERVE

In response to the forwarded message from Mark Uslan, I want to
clarify some of the issues surrounding the changes on CompuServe.
Their change from ASCII to HMI does not mean we will no longer be
able to access CompuServe from DOS. It means we will not be able
to access parts of CompuServe from such terminal programs as COMMO,
Procomm, and Telix. This is less than a great tragedy as those are
the most expensive access approaches to the service.

Tapcis is an upfront DOS based program designed to work with
computers from 286's up. It allows you to read and write offline,
select the things you want to download and prepare your uploads,
then go online only for the computers to talk to each other unless
you simply want to wander around online. Tapcis has just made
their new version available. This version is compatable with the
HMI we are so worried about. I have updated my system, but see very
little change as far as anything I have to be aware of or use. One
of the best things is that these folks have done while others
talked, and TAPCIS is made to work with our screen access software
simply and well. The cost of TAPCIS is $39.00.

If you don't want to spend money, DOSCIM and WINCOM come from
CompuServe free of charge. I have been using both regularly to
test their accessibility and ease of use. DOSCIM works very well
with ASAP without any changes, and excellently with only two
settings made. I have not bothered to make set files for other
screen access programs since I don't need them, but I am sure
others have. As for WINCIM, it works well with WinVision (now
available in WinVision SOLO which does not require the ARTIC
synthesizer) JFW, Window Eyes, etc.. The new version of WINCIM has
a direct connection to the WWW.

Before panic sets in, it is a good idea to learn the facts. K7

From: mur...@tiac.net (Murray Bob)

My mother-in-law has wet macular degeneration. She would like to
find out what visual aids are available to help her with seeing
in the distance. I thought that I read there was some special
device or lenses that redirected the image and used the peripheral
vision which is fine.

Please e-mail me with any ideas we would both be greatful

Thanks

There are several good PSIA/NHS certified programs in the NY and New
England area. Windham Mountain in NY, just north of Hunter Mountain and
in VT there is Mt. Snow. If you need more information please e-mail me or
call National Handicapped Sports for a local program.

Subject: Tinted contact lenses for achromatopsia?
From: DA...@aol.com

I have two daughters who are visually impaired due to achromatopsia. They
primarily have decreased vision, and are very sensitive to light. Currently,
they are wearing sunglassses, sidesheilds, and hats, etc. I heard there are
tinted contact lenses for this condition. Does anyone have any info. about
this? My kids are 7 and 4 years old. Please e-mail me with info. Thanks.
