O BITTERSWEET DAY
Zaki and Azmi fail; Karen and Loo smash records
IT was back to the track and field yesterday as the supposed
Malaysian gold rush slowed to a trickle.
Zaki Sadri kept missing the spot and had to settle for a silver.
Great 100m hope Azmi Ibrahim also had to be content with second
spot, no thanks to a false start which he said had unsettled him.
Bowling, shooting, golf, cycling -- all turned up
empty-handed as far as gold was concerned.
And it was left to walker Annastasia Karen and high jumper
Loo Kum Zee to deliver the golds. For Annastasia, her
record-breaking victory was bittersweet. Back home, her grandmother
had passed away.
But Kum Zee was really jumping for joy. He's on his way to the
Atlanta Olympics.
The snooker folk are still winning the medals -- and losing
sleep. Their fourth gold, dated Wednesday, arrived at 4am Thursday
(Malaysian time).

JOLLY GOOD, SAM
Chong takes his fourth as Rama, Wong and Sarah swell the pot of gold
SAM is playing it again -- and again. Last night, durable snooker
star Sam Chong picked up his fourth gold of the SEA Games,
whitewashing Filipino Marlon Manalo to win the snooker singles
gold.
After a one-day break, the snooker boys were back -- as were the
track and field athletes. M. Ramachandran delivered a gold
in the 5,000m, and Wong Tee Kue added another, throwing the
iron ball to a distance of 57.04m.
Taekwondo veteran Sarah Chung also bade farewell to the Games in
golden fashion. She beat Indonesia's Anis Dewi 4-1 to win
Malaysia's only gold in taekwondo.
Elsewhere, the others ran dry. Both the 4x400m quartets had to
settle for silver, Zaki Sadri was still far from his best and he,
too, went home with a silver.
In the pool, Elvin Chua wept with a bronze in the breaststroke
and smiled with a silver in the 4x100m medley. The shooters, the
shuttlers, the gymnasts and the rugby men all came up short.
Which leaves just Khoo Chin Bee, the sepaktakraw squad, the
hockey boys -- and girls, the squash side and the
badminton doubles squad carrying Malaysia's last golden hopes
before the goodbyes tomorrow.

HIGHWAY STAR
Cyclist leads a rush of eight gold medals
Tsen Seong Hoong conquered the hilly terrain and his opponents in
the 153km road race to bag Malaysia's first cycling gold.
The early-morning victory marked the start of a gold rush. Eight in
all -- the best in one day for the Malaysians at this year's Games.
Zakri Ibrahim and Ahmad Faizal Omar were on a roll in silat.
Then shuttlers Soon Kit and Kim Hock beat their Indonesian nemeses
for the doubles gold.
Over at the alley Sharon Low struck down the Masters title and tiny
Ryan Tan breezed to the Optimist gold in sailing.
As expected the men's hockey team stamped their supremacy to down
the Thais and retain the title.
It was, however, heartache for the women. They played their hearts
out for a scoreless draw with the Thais but lost the gold medal in
a penalty shootout.
In squash, the women lived up to their billing by downing Singapore
to take the title.
But it was not so rosy for the rugby team who, despite their fiery
off-field antics, were mauled by the Thais in the 15-a-side final.
The downer of the day was, of course, the sepaktakraw team.
They had been tagged favourites and were expected to beat Singapore
in the semifinals to set up a showdown with Thailand.
Alas, it did not materialise. The Lions whipped them and they left
the Games with the ignominy of not winning a gold medal for the
first time in 10 years.
