SINGAPORE, June 18 (UPI) -- A Singapore dentist who smiled at a man he
thought he recognized in a public food center found himself beaten and
threatened with arrest when the man turned out to be a police officer, a
police spokesman said Tuesday.
Officer Lee Widjaja Robin, 20, was sentenced Monday to two weeks in
jail and fined $1,063 for punching, threatening and verbally abusing Dr.
Tan Tzee Jen, 31, during an incident which occurred last July.
...
Lee ordered Tan to stop, identified himself as a police officer and
demanded to know the dentist's identity. The policeman then verbally
abused Tan, grabbed him by the collar and dragged him to a telephone and
called other officers for help.
While waiting for his backup to arrive, Lee hit Tan on the back of
the neck.
Lee pleaded guilty to giving false information, punching Tan and
using abusive language, the police spokesman confirmed Tuesday.
...
There have been numerous cases involving brutality and sexual
misconduct by Singapore police in recent months, triggering calls for
more disciplinary action against errant officers.
