I need to find an email that was sent out SMTP to another location (I know
were it went) from an unknown user. The user sent out some bad info and
the Boss want's to talk to that person, but the recipient will not tell who
it was. Does anyone know how I could find this out. We are using
Incognito SMTP Gateway.

Sorry, I misunderstood you. I thought you meant a message sent from
Incognito.

The only way to check is to generate a log report. Check the time
stamp - I doubt that it will go back to Friday, but it is worth a shot.

Chris,

You can try running dos2unix bridge and looking in the
\disk1\local\_ismtp\data\smtp#.log

Chris, I'm not sure about all of your behind-the-scenes options, but I wanted
to make sure that you knew about your "rights", in case it was important enough
to warrant this level of action. The law is very clear that all email
correspondance sent from or to a company-managed account is the property of the
company, and that the individual has no legal right to privacy to anything that
resides on company-owned systems. You have an absolute legal right to do
whatever you need to get to this message. And since you are military, of course
you have an absolute right to order them to provide you access to the message.
Quite frankly, if you know or suspect that this person still has a copy of the
message, the easiest thing is just to change his password and log in as him and
read it!

Of course there are *many* interpersonal and political reasons why someone
should only be allowed to access someone else's mail when absolutely necessary.
Those legal rights come with an equal number of responsibilities, and
communication is stifled and resentment mounts if people fear that someone
might be peeking into their every word. But it can certainly be done if
necessary.

If you have it narrowed down to one or a few users, simply change their
password, login as them and check their sent folders. They may have
already deleted it, so this may not work. You have the legal right (as a
company) to read anyone's e-mail inside that company. The only mail that
is protected under federal law is snail mail that comes to a person in a
company marked "private and confidential". Anything else is fair game. Be
forewarned, though, this smacks of Big Brother and may cause more problems
than it solves. Strange, I was just having this conversation locally
this morning......
