There are three conferences on JAN. Conference (15) is the Job Accommodation
Network where people who are looking for employment can ask questions.
Conference (19) deals with Adaptive Technology. Conference (58) is the
Handilaw section and deals with legal issues. As with any bulletin board,
there is some "fluff" in all of these but there are some very knowledgeable
people who post and respond to questions there. JAN has a staff of consultants
whose jobs are to answer questions. Several specialize in the Americans with
Disabilities Act and other related legislation.
In the past week, there have been a number of posts in the Handilaw Conference
dealing with toll free numbers for disability support, law information, and
some special postings on ADD/ADHD. I believe the message numbers in Handilaw
begin at message number 3499.
JAN has a facility to download messages from the conferences you choose so they
can be read, printed and responded to off-line. This QWK facility is a big
help when you do not want to tie up your own phone and gives you the ability to
browse through messages at your own leisure. If you choose to respond to a
message, you can do that off-line, too, and up-load your response the next time
you contact JAN.
In order to unpack messages that you down-load, you will need PKZIP and a
program like Silly Little Mail Reader. Both are Shareware packages and
probably available through JAN. I happened to pick up both from the IBM PC
Company BBS in Raleigh, NC.
Most of the postings I feel would be of interest were posted by Leslea Mosher
Jones, a lady in Kansas. I am not sure of her source for all this information
but she obviously has a wealth of information and I believe much of it would be
of interest to the people of EASI and the EASI Library distribution lists.
I apologize for posting this to both distribution lists but I think it will be
of interest to both groups and I don't think there is an "exclude" option to
keep from duplicating when both lists are addressed.
Best wishes to all for a healthy, productive and prosperous 1994.
