759 in DDC is a bit confusing at first, because it does two odd things:
(1) It classes individual painters at the country level.
(2) It classes most of Europe in 759.2 - 759.8, dropping the initial
number 4 from Table 2 (the Area table).

In addition, you have a choice here of chronological arrangement (in
759.01 - 759.07) and geographical arrangement (in 759.1 - 759.9).
However, geographical arrangement takes priority except for the case of
European painting of specific periods (which goes in 759.01 - 759.07
rather than 759.94). Unfortunately, the schedules don't say that you can
add the chronological facet by adding standard subdivisions, but there
is an example given under 759.93 - 759.99 (painting and paintings of
1800-1899 in South America in 759.9809034). This means that the
chronological arrangement comes from Table 1 -0901 - -0905, and not from
759.01 - 759.07.

So if you have a work on an individual French impressionist painter, that
would be classed at 759.4 (because you drop the first 4 from Table 2, and
because they are just classed with the country). A work on several French
impressionist painters is classed at 759.409034 (adding the standard
sub-division -09034 from Table 1). And a work on impressionist painters
from several different countries would go to 759.054.

The third alternative in Dana Johnson's message (759.44 + 09034) is
definitely wrong, since in 759.3-759.8, you drop the first 4 in the Area
Table, so that 759.44 would come from Table 2 -444, i.e. it would mean
painters and painting from Eastern France or Burgundy. An easy mistake
to make. (In this library, we have had some books classed at 759.94
instead of 759.994 for Australian painteers and painting -- a similar
mistake!)
