WASHINGTON, May 6 (AFP) - Kosovo Liberation Army fighters now number
between 8,000 and 10,000, an increase of several thousand since NATO
bombing began on March 24, the Pentagon said Thursday.
"The rebel force is stronger today than it was on March 24" when the
North Atlantic Treaty Organization started its aerial bombing campaign,
Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said.
"They are receiving recruits, obviously, from the refugee population
in Albania primarily," he added.
"The number of supporters has also risen dramatically to about
20,000," the spokesman stated, without defining who supporters are.
However, the KLA fighters remain "outmanned and outgunned by Serb
forces," Bacon said. "They continue to fight in the country. They also
continue to take losses," he added.
The spokesman said "from time to time" the KLA fighters have "held
blocks of territory."
The KLA "are inflicting fatalities on the VJ (Yugoslav army) and the
MUP, the special police, and they're doing that with increasing
regularity," the spokesman said.
But, he added that it was hard to quantify the numbers because all of
"our reports come from the KLA."
Bacon said it was "clear ... that they are continuing to buy weapons
on the international market."
