PRESS RELEASE
Stockholm, May 5th 1999
Concerning several articles and "analysis" published these days in some of
the western media,
Kosova´s Office in Scandinavia, as the Diplomatic Representative of Kosova,
feels obliged to clarify a few things either not understood or
misinterpreted and, unfortunately, published these days with (or without)
intention to damage the reputation of the KLA (Kosova Liberation Army, or
UÇK in Albanian) and/or the newly formed Government of Kosova.
The Serb propaganda machinery tried for such a long time to draw a false
picture of the KLA by labeling these forces as either pro-communist or
pro-Islamic.
Fortunately, the KLA proved on the ground it was pro-western and that it had
nothing to do with religion (Albanians belong to three different religions:
Catholics, Muslims and Orthodox, and had never in their history religious
misunderstandings).
The KLA is the army born within Kosova after so many years of non-violent
struggle of the political and Governmental forces of Kosovar Albanians to
find a peaceful resolution for the occupied and oppressed people of Kosova.
Since this peaceful struggle met no results, the KLA was formed to protect
the ethnic Albanian civilians from the most notorious regime of the 20th
century, the Serb (Yugoslav)
regime of Milosevic and its followers.
"KLA´s Ideology and Religion is Kosova" is the motto and the driving force
of these brave fighters for freedom and democracy.
By trying to portray "some wings" of the KLA as "reds" some authors think
that this way they can (at the same time) portray the same way the newly
formed Government of Kosova, led by Prime Minister Hashim Thaqi who was for
some time the Head of the Political Directorate of the KLA.
Having been authorized by the people of Kosova to sign the Peace Agreement
and form a new Government, the representatives of the people of Kosova
during the Peace talks in France (February and March this year) decided that
the KLA should nominate the Prime Minister.
This was the decision taken and signed by the leadership of the Democratic
League of Kosova, the United Democratic Movement and by the representatives
of the Kosova Liberation Army.
The document was signed on Feb.23rd 1999.
