Thank you to all who replied about my question concerning a ski pole
tripod. Especially to Norm Betts who called me about one of the neatest
devices for cameras that is used for hiking.

I settled upon a device that nobody had mentioned. After I looked at all
of the recommendations, I went to B&H to see what they had. The device I
decided that would be the best, although not yet being stocked by B&H,
is a small clamp with a swivel head stud for cameras. It is called the
High Sierra Clampette. It is a small clamp that will attach to just
about anything. When cross-country skiing, you rely upon the poles to
give you some balance and rhythm. Having a pole heavier on one-side will
unbalance the throw weight and screw up your balance. So the clampette
is great because you just put it in your camera back, attach the clamp
to your pole when you need it and then put the camera on the stud. I
will probably put a small Arca-Swiss style quick-release plate on the
stud for my camera. They also have a clampette that will fit bicycle
handle-bars and round tubes.
