Yeah Tim, but it sure takes a long time to drive from eastern Ontario to
the Columbia River to fish for those huge rainbows with a dry fly.

Hi,
can anyone tell me the best way to add a simple search engine to a web site
for clients to search for catalouged images on file?
can i use extensis portfolio 6 for something like this ?
regards and happy new yr

Other wise you need some sort of PHP & SQL, or CGI.
I like to roll my own, but I thank there are pre-packaged search systems for this.
Take a look at Brian Yarvins site. He is using an off site index and search system from another company.
good luck.

They do custom size database searches
at lower prices than $50/100MB. Looks pretty
good. I'm waiting for custom pricing.
Google will work but it searches your META
header. It might work without that if
it would read your robots.txt file and
you make sure nothing is excluded.
The problem with getting a robust search is
that it needs to be a server-side app. If your
ISP supports ASP (mine doesn't), then you can
create a search script with Perl or Java or
a canned package.

That seems to be more like an e-commerce solution. Very good and quite
expensive.
If only a search facility is needed, then less complicated ways are easier
and cheaper.
I have been using for some time Exhibit Engine (a shareware $35)...

(look from the support forum, the 1.3 version is about to be released,
already being tested)
...a php/mysql database application. You need your isp to support php and
mysql, of course.
The search is based on keywords and categories you assign for each photo in
administration. Easy to customize in many ways. Includes also a simple
e-commerce template.

(this is modified quite a lot)

The basic question is whether you want to search a static site or have a
dynamic site where the pages are created on the fly based on the search.
Google and others can other work fine with the smaller static sites and your
hosting company may even offer the service. For larger collections dynamic
such as HindSight's searchLynx can work well. The dynamic catalogs tend to
be a good solution, but you have to have an provider that will support your
choice of search engine. Some providers specialize in offering some of these
services. It is also really handy to get a search engine that works with the
database that you use to catalog your images in your office.
Good luck,

All I do is go away for one afternoon and I find myself the topic of
discussion here!
Gary; first of all, you've overstated the price of DPO tenfold! It's
$50.00 per gig per month - a fairly typical hosting price. As for the
custom pricing, just write to Tim and tell him what you need, it's
"custom" after all.
So far, DPO is only a partial ecommerce solution. It doesn't have
any sort of automatic payment and download feature just yet.

Although I have often wished I lived in the same place as DPO, (in
a lovely village on the slopes of Mt. Blanc in the French Alps) I do
not. Nor have I used it long enough to describe myself as "happy."
But the setup was easy, and fifty dollars a month for hosting a
whole gig of space didn't seem too out of line. (Although, I noticed
that dedicated servers offer multi gig deals at much lower prices
per gig)
As I have said in previous posts, DPO seemed like a good way for
me to test the waters of web marketing.

The system will come with a manager page where you can upload images off your hard drive to your site, add captions, keywords, categories, tracking info, and more.
edit images that you added to the data base, and also delete them.
I will be packaging my price calculator with the system.
It all runs on JAVA, PHP, and SQL, designed to be used with sites like yahoo's geocities.
After I'm done with this, I will be diving in to my VB6, and build a computer based system that will let you handle your images locally as well as upload them to the server.
Any though would help we with making this system work better.
