Its not sensible to have a small number of film dupes made from drum
scan. It is best to make 70mm direct from film if duping a lot of
originals

That makes small runs of dupes (say 5) equal to a drum scan cost of 10
quid approx (ie 2 quid per dupe)

Drum scans so acceptable on CD i have stopped having 70mm dupes made for
ourselves anyway

The drum scan - master dupe - 70mm route suitable for agencies making
maybe 100 - 300 dupes i think

cheers

Dear Pete

Just about all the truly successful photographers I know in mainstream stock
go down the scan and LVT route. The big advantage of the scan is that they
can do retouching and corrections before duping. This is photographers who
ship to ten or twelve different agencies on country exclusive deals.

Hi Bob
Obviously i am not truly successful ;-)

We go the LVT route when we need to crop or retouch and to produce a
dupe. If i thought film dupes were in our future we might invest in the
right gear but it would not be sensible to do that now IMHO - not for
our own business anyway as we only routinely make about 5 - 10 dupes (or
we used to). Despite the Foot and Mouth outbreak we are making some
sales now to corporate agriculture (wonders will never cease) All have
been digitally delivered as drum scan or original film supplied. 70mm
film dupes are no longer on our shopping list. Our strategy is now DRUM
or ORIGINAL

It is no accident however that our drum scans are in a format suitable
for making a 5x4 master if we need to. If a client ABSOLUTELY has to
have film they can pay for an LVT output. But where would the sense be
in that! :-)

cheers

Pete

PS is Cornwall open for Tourism yet then? The government says it is
allright now!? It has been quite a winter with all the Floods and MAFF
disease!! My last PS on a post here said i thought it had peaked last
week. Just goes to show how wrong a person can be!
