Rules On Cracked Windscreens For Microphones

The technology behind JZ Microphones products has a long history. A microphone setup using the MS technique is rather easy to implement, since the two microphone housings are directed parallel to each other. For example, a double clip such as the SGMSC (HSGMSC), the AMS 22 or the stereo bar UMS 20 can be used. Even a boundary layer microphone can be expanded into an MS pair with the MS-BLM adapter. For mobile and outdoor use, an elastic suspension and windscreen are needed. Wireless microphones, handheld and lapel packs, can have an option for locking the On/Off switch. For example, in our Shure handhelds, if I hold down the SET and MODE buttons at the same time, for a few seconds, it locks the switch. This means that if the switch is moved to the Off position, it stays on. This is great for preventing people from accidentally turning off a microphone.
Due to this state-by-state variation, however, it's worth brushing up on your state's specific rules as well as which dash cam fixtures are legal in your state. This will help you avoid any run-ins with the law.
Luckily, most acoustic microphones cover a wide frequency range capable of capturing ultra-low frequencies, too. Likewise, calls that might be slightly higher pitched than the acoustic sound range could also be captured by the same acoustic recorder device.
Additionally, use the windscreens that come with Wildlife Acoustics microphones. If needed, you can also purchase extra large windscreens and place them on top of those ones already installed for an extra layer of wind protection.
Another option might be to use a reflector. If you know the direction that most of the wind is traveling, you can place your recording device behind something, like a rock, so that wind will travel around it, while the smaller sound waves from wildlife calls are able to travel around and to the microphones.
With UV exposure from direct sunlight, the foam in the microphone windscreens can break down over time. Even if they turn brown, which is normal, the windscreens are still useful until they begin to flake away. At this point, you may need to replace them.
There are some ways you can mitigate temperature swings. For example, by using cabled microphones, some scientists keep their recorder in an insulated cooler during overnight temperature swings. Another researcher in Antarctica buried his units to keep them warmer!
If you want to get around the limits of internal mics, consider investing in a smartphone-compatible lavalier mic. There are a limited number of lightning compatible mics or (far more) USB-C compatible mics, and these can cost more than just buying a dedicated voice recorder. Lavalier mics allow you to record someone speaking without holding your phone to their mouth, while mini condenser mics do a good job of accurately recording the environment and the people. Most voice recording apps already support external microphones, so compatibility is a non-issue.
