I needed to print out a pdf document today and 4 hours later managed to
print it --- using adobe reader in my virtual xp machine.

Everytime I tried top print it with Ubuntu 10.4 either AMD64 or the 32
bit OS I would get the message "/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftoraster failed"

I was using an epson cx6000 printer and tried from my desktop running
64bit, my netbook running 64bit and mt wife's laptop running 32 bit
Ubuntu. Each machine was recently updated and on the netbook I had
uninstalled cups and reinstalled it to see of that would help.

Googling the issue showed it was a known issue but the notes seemed to
say it was closed and fixed with an update to ghostwriter. I could not
find any details on how to accomplish this and since the document needed
to be in the mail I succumbed to using XP to get the job done.

This issue does not seem to be printer dependent. Have any of you
printed any pdf files since the upgrade and if so did you have this
issue? I would like to find the fix but I'm stymied right now.

I just tested this and had no issues. I'm on 32 bit.

I'm on a 64-bit machine, Printed to a Savin, HP, and a Brother using
Document Viewer 2.30.3. No Problems. I have an Epson at home, but I'm
sure there are no problems there either.

I have to laser printers at home a brother and an OKI and i can print to
both printer from the command line and any other program that i have
tried. I did before installing testing these to printers on my 64 bit
Ubuntu 10.04 machine setup the necessary stuff to be able to have it act
as a print server.

So far I'm the only one with this issue! I'll try linuxprint and see if
there is a better driver for the Epson CX6000.

I'm having issues with all of my printers since the upgrade to 10.4.
Maybe because other than the epson they are all antiques. I have a
Cannon BJ-30 which I keep around just because it is so portable, a
slightly larger but still portable HP-340c with sheet feeder, and a
Canon BJC-240. I have always been able to use them with my linux
machines. I have a lpt to USB cable so I can connect to my laptop and
netbook.

Since the upgrade I cannot even get my machines to see the BJ-30. They
will recognize the HP but when I try to print a a test page it goes to
processing and stalls at 35% eveytime. The BJC-240 shows up as an option
but fails to print with the following from troubleshooting -"Unable to
write 8192 bytes to printer!'. I have attached the diagnostic output
which came after this message:
Sorry! There is no obvious solution to this problem. Your answers have
been collected together with other useful information.

This is not urgent since I can print using the Epson (as long as it is
not a PDF file) but if anyone can point me towards a solution or even a
reason why none of these printers will work. I would appreciate it.

Just an update, I printed a PDF out on my epson printer using adobe
reader. I'm sure other programs will work as well, for me that is.

Just for confirmation from those of you that tried: all printing attempts were with PDF's, right?

ghostscript-cups is the package that maintains the
file /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftoraster - which is the file referenced in
Dave's error message. I suspect that the package is not there or needs
reinstalling.
