Audio & video through HDMI?

My new netbook has an HDMI port which I tried out today and was
delighted with the result playing a DVD using VLC. I was wondering if
there was a way to send audio along with the video signal through the
HDMI port. I can jury-rig sound out using the headset jack but it would
be a much better solution if ine cable would take care of everything.
Any ideas?

I got the audio to work by going to the Sound Preferences and changing
the hardware profile to one of the Digital profiles. I had 2 digital
profiles and they both used my HDMI monitor's speakers.

I have thought about trying to get my HDMI to auto sync and hotplug.
I've done like 0 research on it so far though. You figure out a way to
do that and I would be interested.

Thanks Anthony - I forgot that I had added PulseAudio to manage the
sound (that was necessary to get the internal microphone to work with
Skype) and sure enough under configuration there is an option for
digital through HDMI haven't checked it out yet but I'm sure that's the
answer. I will check to see if there is an autosync and/or hotplug
solution that would be nice.
