I'm trying to remove Win4Lin on my Kubuntu 9.10 laptop (was testing it for use with a different desktop that "required" a Windows app), but I get a terrible error.  I've messed around with dpkg a lot, but to no avail...  here's the output (I know I'm probably giving bad arguments to dpkg):::

danf@skittles:~$ sudo dpkg -P --force-depends --force-remove-reinstreq win4linpro

Dave had this to say (in another thread):

No problem. i had a similar problem with a broken package and had to
work hard to solve it. I think this was what finally solved the problem

dpkg --purge --force-all package_name

/good luck with your issue.

Sadly, I got the same errors running "dpkg --purge --force-all win4linpro" (as root).  I'm struggling to resolve the problem with insserv, specifically with the loop errors.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, preferably before I pull out the rest of my hair.  ;)

This was the problem I was trying to solve (went back to the forum I was
using for help)
Install failed and I get the following message when I try to open
package manger:
E: The package eeestorage needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an
archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report.

I have tried running dpkg --configure -a, apt-get -f, sudo rm
-f /var/lib/apt/lists/*,

Still unable to access package manager.

This was the fix that worked (it looks similar to one you tried)

sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq xxx

A package marked reinst-required is broken and requires
reinstallation. These packages cannot be removed,
unless forced with option --force-remove-reinstreq.

Hope there may be some clue hidden in this.

Dave,

Thank you for your input!  I spent many hours last night working on this problem, and it seems that one of the things I did must have fixed it (I did the standard "sudo apt-get remove win4linpro" that I originally tried, but this time it worked).

Basically, I went through the errors (not warnings) from that first message and worked to remove them.  I removed the symlink copies of vmware (vmware-autostart, vmware-mgmt, and vmware-core), though I'm not sure if that borked VMware or not.  I also removed my old "special" script for unmounting network-mounted shares (umount__networkShares.sh) from back in the day of 8.04).

The errors with "hwclock" were a bit more interesting to fix.  In /etc/init.d/, there was a file called "hwclock" that was a symlink to "/lib/init/upstart-job".  I removed the symlink and replaced it with an actual file, with these contents:

#! /bin/sh -e

### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides:          hwclock
# Required-Start:
# Required-Stop:
# Default-Start:
# Default-Stop:      0 6
# Short-Description: hwclock... (hope this works)
# Description:       Does stuff for the hwclock... yeah.  Hope it works.
### END INIT INFO

PATH="/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin"
. /lib/init/upstart-job

That final part referencing "upstart-job" does essentially the same thing as the symlink, but this way I can add custom LSB tags... I really had to fudge on the LSB tags (FYI: those are the things between "BEGIN INIT INFO" and "END INIT INFO" comments): to figure it out, I basically did a locate for hwclock, and found that it had these entries:::

/etc/rc0.d/K25hwclock.sh
/etc/rc6.d/K25hwclock.sh

 So I used an educated guess, based on my knowledge of the "/etc/rc*.d/" setup (sysv?) startup scripts and added the entries for "Default-Stop" in the afore-mentioned LSB tags.  I think that was the final bit that fixed the problem.

I still get all kinds of warnings when I do anything that attempts to affect the boot order (there are still errors about loops that prevent some things from getting installed/removed).  Any help with **automatically** generating / updating scripts with LSB tags would be very much appreciated.  I don't really like the idea of reinstalling (I'm assuming that would fix it, as the scripts seem to have gone through a conversion process for the "upstart" system).
