In the world of surfing, there are two main types of surfboards: softboards and hardboards. The choice between the two depends on a variety of factors, including your skill level, personal preference, and the type of surfing you want to do.

Softboard surfboards are made from a variety of materials, including polyurethane foam, polystyrene foam, and polyester foam. They are often used by beginners because they have that soft exterior, making them safer to use and easier to ride and control. They're also generally more durable than hardboards, which means they can withstand impacts from rocks or other hard objects without getting damaged too easily. The soft exterior may dent a little bit, but it will not compromise the water-tight integrity of the board like it would on a hard surfboard. Softboard surf sessions are great for summertime small waves...maximize your fun!

TCSS owner Ryan Gerard says: "Soft surfboards have been all the rage the last few years for a variety of reasons: they're safe, easy to surf, and ideal for kids, new surfers, and even good surfers wanting to just have a little fun. Maybe best of all? They are more affordable than traditional hardboards."

Soft boards come in all shapes and sizes, from single fin logs to high-performance outlines. With a soft board, you can maximize your time in the water on small waves without having to ride a longboard. All softboards, regardless of their shape or length, pack more than enough volume to help you paddle into tiny summer surf. High-performance softboards are incredibly responsive, making one-foot days and slow-breaking longboard waves rippable.

Shore breaks and closeouts used to be forbidden fruit for most surfers who would never risk life and limb, not to mention their boards, trying to ride such hazardous surf. Soft boards are durable enough to take a beating in the shore break, yet soft enough not to injure you if you collide with them while wiping out. No matter how fierce the shore break looks, you can at least attempt to tame it on a soft board.

Our Epoxy Soft Surfboard range is designed with a bit more performance built in for those ready for the next step in becoming an intermediate surfer needing a soft surfboard in their quiver for small wave fun.

Hopefully in the beginning you are learning how to surf with the assistance of a knowledgeable friend, family member, or surf instructor which is not only safer for you and everyone else in the water, but should expedite your learning process making each session more enjoyable and more productive. If you have never surfed before, or consider your time and knowledge of surfing and the ocean very limited, then I recommend keeping it safest and easiest by going with a soft-top longboard.

Handmade from highly durable materials, and constructed using proven manufacturing techniques, Softech surfboards are built to withstand the toughest of treatment and are available in a range of styles to suit the beginner through to the most experienced rider.

Foam Surfboards are surf boards made from high density foam with a slick plastic base, they are stable, forgiving to surf and perfect for beginner surfers or surfers looking for a lower price board for a bit of fun.

Foam surfboards are also known as foamies or softboards and not to be confused with soft top surfboards which are a hard board with a thin layer of foam on the deck. Foamies come in many different sizes and styles as well as colours and designs.

Foamies started off as basic shapes purely aimed at learner surfers but in recent years there has been an explosion in popularity of these board amongst more experienced surfers too. The emergence of better shaped boards and higher quality materials has meant that the potential performance in these boards has increased hugely which is why they have become more attractive to better surfers.

Brands like Catch Surf and Softech amongst others have led the charge in this area with high performance shapes and collaborations which established surfboard manufacturers like Lost and Channel Islands. However, the majority of soft surfboards are still aimed at and sold to the beginner and improver market. The size range runs from 5ft 8 foamies with all sizes available right up to a 9ft foam longboards.

The most popular sizes are the 7ft and 8ft foam surfboards, these boards suit almost everyone from bigger kids to adults up to 90kgs. The newer Hybrid foamie surfboards are a brilliant addition to the established shapes, they offer more performance and faster progression whilst still paddling really well. Foam mini mals are the perfect surfboard to get even the most inexperienced surfer paddling and catching waves, the forgiving shape and high volume make them the perfect surfboard choice to begin your surfing journey. At Boardshop we specialise in getting new surfers on the right board, we have years of experience of doing this and pride ourselves on giving the right advice.

In 1926, Tom Blake took a hunk of redwood, drilled a bunch of holes in it, and encased it in thinner wood to build a 15 foot, 19 inch wide, 4 inch thick, 100 pound surfboard. The natives pointed and laughed at him until the additional volume of the "Cigar board" smoked all of them in the water. Blake's design became the first mass produced board in 1930. Since then, other lighter products such as balsa wood and styrofoam have been used as an insert. The shape has been refined but surfboards with an increased amount of volume have been helping beginner surfers ever since.

Surfing is supposed to be fun, right? How much more fun can you have surfing on a virtually indestructible foam top surfboard that is going to help you catch every wave that comes along. Whether you're an expert surfer who just wants to take it easy and catch a few waves or looking for a beginner surfboard to stand up on, a foam soft top surfboard is for all levels.
