Tuesday 11/8/2011 in honor of the recent holiday, Halloween, we will
be discussing fear.

Fear, arguably, is the most basic of emotion. The very cornerstone of
survival and self presevation. A lowly creature emerging from the
primordial sea to venture onto the land and then scurrying back in to
the water no doubt knew fear if even on an instinctual level.
Similarly when God created Adam religious texts emphasize the fact God
desired Adam to fear him. But is fear truly the most basic of emotion?

In the example of evolution, fear wasn't a result of thought but more
a result of instinct. Of hard wired self presevation. So perhaps fear
could be something as simple as a reflex- an instinct for survival. Is
this how you feel though when you go to see the latest Paranormal
Activity movie or what you feel after you have a nightmare?

In the example of creationism it is a requirement that man should fear
God. Before woman was ever created it was necessary for Adam to fear
God, but are the emotions of Love and Fear totally different? Think of
the people whom you love, is there anything about this relationship
that is fearful? The Journal of Cognitive Psychology published an
article which asked this question of longterm couples (married and
unmarried); "Discounting any physical violence is there any component
of fear in your relationship?" 71% said there was. The 29% who felt no
component of fear were then asked about fidelity in their
relationship. In the "no fear" category 79% said they had or would
engage in outside relationships, 98% replied in the affirmative if
there was no chance they would get "caught." These numbers are
significantly higher than the national average of 55% and 71%
respectively. It would seem that fear is a part of love- or at least
of fidelity- which we tend to associate with love.

Join us at Heritage Hall room 107 (the big room on the first floor
with the stadium seating) at 7pm. We will socialize for 30 minutes and
begin the discussion promptly at 730pm. Wrap up at 9pm and plan next
weeks meeting.

See you there!
