Hi JUG,
Based primarily on a general lack of both time and enthusiasm, I've made some alternative arrangements with regard to our user group that some people might find distressing. This is your chance to opt out of the distress, so read carefully.
Ken Osvath of Allstates (a technical recruiting) has been exceedingly gracious with facilities regarding our meetings and has proposed that we increase the strength of our working relationship based on some internal initiatives with their corporate office for expanding outreach to user communities. Specifically, Allstates would provide facilities and food on a recurring basis as well as handling the marketing of the group within and without. I have accepted this arrangement, since it would mean that those duties will no longer be handled by me and frankly I don't have the time to do them. Effectively, this means that Allstates' marketing department would be the primary source of outbound communications for our group. The process of passing this off involves me giving them the contact list of the JUG. I know that some people might not find this palatable, so I have a proposal:
If you don't want your contact information (i.e. name and email address) to go to Allstates, then you'll need to drop from this group.
If you still want to be informed of events, then join the birmingham-jug-announce google group.
The membership of that list will not be distributed to Allstates. I will continue to forward the meeting announcements to that list. The marginal downside is that you won't be able to participate in our non-existent conversations online, since the announce group is just that. To be fair, Ken has stated that they won't be a source of constant spam. They've also been very accommodating to our group for many months, so taking a bit of marketing from them seems relatively palatable to me. However, if you don't agree you have 3 days to either drop or switch (i.e. drop and add). I will be giving Allstates access to this list on Friday.
I apologize for the steamroller nature of this change.
