Evening all,

It has been mentioned a few times we need a meeting about what to do
next.

Me and Sarah can both do the 8th of May, does anyone have an issue
with this?

Anything that people would like to bring up?

Kind Regards

Gareth

We need to try and sort out a plan for where FizzPop is going, and how we are going to try to get it there.

I have very limited time to help out, but we need things such as, tweeting/facebooking/posting on the blog regular activities, meetings and the like - I didn't see any advertising for whatever took place earlier this evening! The only way to grow the following and increase uptake is to use social media effectively. Which, mostly, just means "often".

As regards premises, the Aston Uni place looks good, but risks being subsumed by students. BCA are leaving/relocating, and nothing more has been heard about the other venue in the Old Glassworks (or whatever it was called) This needs discussion too. We really need to find somewhere that lets us stock the place with some tools and allows some sort of self-determination, but that takes money and people to, at least to start with, run things.

This lack of a space also leads to the "What night are we meeting?" thing - there's no space per se, so we are a group meeting up somewhere, meaning a specific place and time, rather than the open 24/7 somewhere semi-permanent that you normally find. (London basically has people there 24/7, and members use a reader that interfaces with their Oyster card called "Doorbot" for secure(ish) access. {They are also talking about a new system called ACNode to limit access to certain tools to those flagged in the member's database})

One thing I find amazing is that almost none of us are based in Birmingham, too. This leads to obvious issues, until a larger group is formed.

Last night was on the google calender and a facebook event, do you
think we need more?

Personally I think we look at the old print works over Aston, would be
ours then. I also have a plan for what happens if no one starts
turning up and fizzPOP can't afford then rent (basically I have it).

Working away the next couple of days but will try and speak to the Old
Print Works people and go and see it early next week. Will take a load
of photos and put all info up here.

Obviously, there'll be more said next week but I found it really interesting hearing a couple of the ideas for potential new spaces.

I must admit the idea of a dedicated space with 24-7 access appeals a lot, especially as being able to say come in over a weekend and stay for an entire afternoon and evening would make the commute less significant relative to the time there, although I wonder if having 24-7 access would mean that you'd let a lot of members who'd just never meet up, so it'd definitely be good to also have focussed "meeting up and discussing something" sessions as well.

Also, I laser cut my first thing last night, and even though the case is slightly too small for my PCB and the holes are all in the wrong place, it's still exciting seeing a professional looking thing come out of the cutter! I'd definitely vote for us to get a laser cutter in any new home! :)

I'm wondering if it's bad that on Thursday morning I woke up early busy planning the changes I want to make to my case ready for next Wednesday... :)

Cheers,
     Ralf.

Two suggestions:

A local entrepreneur by the name of Mark Hales is trying to start a startup incubator and co-working space (like Google Campus) in the Jewellery Quarter. Last I heard he'd put in a bid on a building near St Paul's Square. He might provide space. This is the fellow:

Alternatively, there are buildings in the Aston Science Park that are substantially empty. I'd start by talking to the people at bsp-a.com, though I believe some of the buildings are now controlled by the City Council.

Hi Noel. Spoke to someone at the science park last week, they had no
interest at all. Apparently they are low on space . Will send a
message to Mark now.

Ralf, personally think that is all good :) Totally agree with themed
nights/general "get to togethers", Tom had the same idea. Hard to do
now but definately something to do if we have a location.

Faraday Wharf might be low on space, but I know for a fact at least two buildings in the Science Park are 1/2 empty. However I think the Council has taken over these buildings, which might explain why the Science Park blanked you. I'll attempt to find out more.

Just thought the epilogue on this page was interesting following on the the charity discussion:

http://hackspace.org.uk/view/Charitable_status
(via http://hackspace.org.uk/view/Starting_a_Hackerspace)

Also some of the comments in http://russ.garrett.co.uk/2009/10/25/starting-a-non-profit-in-the-uk/ suggest looking at an LLP as an organisational structure. There's a bit more info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_liability_partnership#United_Kingdom but the thing that stood out is that an LLP pays no corporation or capital gains tax, which would normally apply to a company that leaves money in an account rather than paying it out to shareholders.

Cheers,
     Ralf.

Having looked at the Companies House website at length today, an LLP would be perfect, except for :

3. Who can incorporate an LLP?

Two or more persons associated for carrying on a lawful business with a view to profit can incorporate an LLP by subscribing to its incorporation document. In law, 'person' includes individuals and companies or firms. LLPs are not applicable for all activities, for example, non-profit making activities.

(Their emphasis) So that rules that out! (It is slightly confusing though as there is mention of a co-op using this model to incorporate. That would involve everyone being a member of the LLP though, which I think might get very clumsy very quickly - imagine 50 members of equal status, and voting on everything!)

Apparently the people to contact about most of the buildings in the Science Park are Birmingham Property Services (BCC) on 0121 303 3935.
