Hello Birmingham hackers and makers,

sorry if this is becoming a double post, I've had some beef with the
Google Groups web interface.

My name is Conrad and I am from Leipzig, where I am involved in the
Sublab hackerspace [1][2]. I have a slightly off-topic inquiry, but
maybe some of you could be so kind to help me out a little.

I have a good friend who is considering moving to Birmingham for a job.
We may very likely travel to Birmingham for a few days sometime soon for
her to get an impression of the city. She is not a techie, but highly
values education of any kind. Also, I want to get an impression of the
city, too, and I am a techie :) I would love to come to one of your
meetings, but it is highly unlikely that a Wednesday will be involved.

So my question is: do any of you have any good hints about things/places
we should check out? Stuff that is not in the standard guide books? Be
it nerdy or romantic, indoors or outdoors, analog or digital, your
favorite coffee shop, your favorite piece of street art, whatever...

Also, bonus points if you could recommend a cheap, decent hostel or b&b
with 2-bed rooms!

I would be very grateful for any responses and obviously offer the same
service to any of you should you ever consider visiting Leipzig!

Cheers and thanks a lot,
Conrad

Hey Conrad,

This is definitely not an abuse of the mailing list, I hope we can come up with some cool stuff. I'll be thinking about it and will get back to you.

Tell us when you decide on a date! :)

I know that German expatriates meet at Urban Coffee on the 2nd Sunday of each month for kaffee und kuchen.  If you happened to be in town on that weekend, I expect they'd have a useful perspective.  http://www.urbancoffee.co.uk/events/

Hey Tom,

thanks for your reply. As it turns out now, I myself will very unfortunately not make it to Birmingham. My friend will be there the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of May. She already has a place to stay, but if you have any suggestions for special events or places, that would of course still be of interest!

If she takes the job, I will come visit some time :)

Cheers, Conrad
