Have you not been there? It's huge. One floor of an old lace factory, IIRC.

You won't need to - our new 'space is quite impressive, if everything goes to plan!

No, I've never been to Nottinghack's actual space. London's old place, and Manchester. I don't have the time I used to for wandering/racing around the country doing random stuff. Having said that, I have been to 4 venues for fizzPOP now... ;-)

http://rubbertreeplant.co.uk/archives/596 should give some idea.

At the moment we are talking to the old print works. We will be moving
once the lease is approved and signed ... so not sure yet.

More info as we get it

I guess I've missed some information as I've not managed to come along for the last 2 weeks... Am I correct in assuming we'll meet at the BCA next week as usual? It looks like I should be able to make it along this week!

Anyway, looking at the pictures, it looks like a nice space! One thought I had from looking at that is it isn't totally clear if the space includes an outside wall, which would probably be useful for venting any fumes from laser cutting (and also, is drywall sufficient to keep out fumes from a laser cutter?)

I've also done a bit more reading, and apparently it's common for acryllic to continue leaching fumes for up to a day after cutting, so it might be nice to have another place to store cut things until they stop being smelly if we're expecting that people will leave things at the space...

Anyway, all exciting stuff and I'm keen to get more details! :)

Cheers,
    Ralf.

Yes, we are at the BCA tomorrow. I'll be bringing photos of the other options for spaces too, as I'm going out looking at 3 or so more with the council tomorrow afternoon. (If anyone on the list wants to come along, drop me a quick response and we can arrange to meet up)

Yes, drywall is fine for keeping funny smells out, if we use foil lined. Also, that entire back wall is windows, and there are 4 extractor fan spaces, with two extractor fans in them, so venilation is going to be trivial, as long as we don't generate enough fumes to get through the wall the other side and annoy them, or to leak back in through our other windows! We could easily have to pipe the fumes through a water trap first, or some form of filter, if we wanted/needed to.

Also, the smell from cut acrylic isn't harmful, as far as I know. (We should google that though!) If it was an issue we could restrict the (theoretical) laser cutter to plywood or whatever, to make sure we don't have issues. If you've ever stood outside BCA while they've been cutting, the fumes are actually rather nasty!

I did a little bit of googling when I was surprised the acryllic I cut the other week was still smelly the next day.

It turns out that acryllic is made by casting PMMA, which I've a bit of experience with as I googled it extensively when they were putting it on the roof at work and so we were subjected to these fumes coming in through the aircon for about a week. During that time, I found the fumes very unpleasant and after a few hours each time, I started to feel pretty nauseous and had to go outside and get some fresh air and I know I wasn't able to really concentrate or focus on my work.

That said, when I googled it PMMA itself is pretty safe (that is polymethyl methacrylate, not the metamphetamine PMMA which is also known as ecstasy!) however, when casting it (and presumably also what's released when laser cutting) the monomer methyl methacrylate is produced in small quantities, and this stuff is considered toxic. I say "considered" because wikipedia lists it as an "acute toxin", and people working with PMMA in the US have strict guidelines on exposure levels, in terms of having to wear respiratory equipment and limiting hours of exposure per day. However, here in the UK, it seems to be considered safe and no such government guidelines are in place, although people will wear masks etc anyway just because it smells so nasty. There were also loads of notices slapped up all over the building saying categorically that while unpleasant the fumes were totally safe, although the reasoning they gave was totally wrong ("PMMA is safe, it's the same as perspex" etc rather than mentioning anything about MMA which is the real issue).

Personally, I'm sceptical of the safety of the fumes and would suggest it'd be best to make sure we do our best to get the fumes out of the building, especially if the space is going to be 24-7, just because of how I felt after breathing the fumes at work for a prolonged period. That said, I don't think there are any legal safety requirements to be worried about.

Ralf.
