While a cookout might be a fun gathering, I think Chowdowns are best
done in restaurants, or with variations like our Cheesedown or perhaps
even a Brewdown/Winedown.
And for restaurant Chowdowns, I think they work best when we can order
family style, preferably small plate kinda stuff. That way
participants can turn other people onto favorite and exotic dishes or
people can discover something new. To me, Chowdowns are about
stretching our horizons and learning more about a cuisine or a
particular restaurant. (That's why the Cheesedown worked so well).
I have a few suggestions for Chowdowns:
* Do-Di-Yo's, with its small plates, appetizers and interesting sides.
It's in SoHo.
* Korean food: Ginza (Inverness) would be my top choice, because it
has the table-grilling option to go with kitchen-cooked menu items.
But either restaurant on Green Springs Highway also would work,
especially the one with the attached market to add to the discovery
aspect of the experience.
* Another one that just came to mind: Ali Baba's in Hoover. New owners
took it over within the last year or so and changed its emphasis to
Persian home cooking. One of the owners brought his sister over from
Iran to cook. It will be both familiar and exotic, with elements of
Greek and Indian cuisine filtered through a Persian lens.
Down the road I'd like to do another Cheesedown. Don't know if I can
wait until April 15, but that was the perfect day for the prior one
because I bought a lot of cheese without having to pay 10% tax on it.
