Hello folks!

I saw where there was the proposal for going to Do Di Yo's for the
next Chowdown. There's also been talk of having a cook-out, potluck
dinner, Mexican/Latin American, etc.

Summer tends to be busy with vacations and such. But maybe we can
still get together sometime during the next couple of months.

Where would you like to go?

If you like the idea of a cook-out or pot-luck - who can host it?

Ideas?

A cookout at Oak Mt state park might be nice.....

You know, I've been reading Big Daddy's comments about the wonderful
beef and pork offerings at Pepper Place, and I'm thinking a cook-out
sounds great.

However, not sure folks will want to get out and brave the heat and
the bugs.

We're moving in July so that'll be a crazy month for us to plan for
much after the 4th. But would be open for anything (indoors or
outside) between now and then.

Any new places opening up around town we might want to try?

While a cookout might be a fun gathering, I think Chowdowns are best
done in restaurants, or with variations like our Cheesedown or perhaps
even a Brewdown/Winedown.

And for restaurant Chowdowns, I think they work best when we can order
family style, preferably small plate kinda stuff. That way
participants can turn other people onto favorite and exotic dishes or
people can discover something new. To me, Chowdowns are about
stretching our horizons and learning more about a cuisine or a
particular restaurant. (That's why the Cheesedown worked so well).

I have a few suggestions for Chowdowns:
* Do-Di-Yo's, with its small plates, appetizers and interesting sides.
It's in SoHo.
* Korean food: Ginza (Inverness) would be my top choice, because it
has the table-grilling option to go with kitchen-cooked menu items.
But either restaurant on Green Springs Highway also would work,
especially the one with the attached market to add to the discovery
aspect of the experience.
* Another one that just came to mind: Ali Baba's in Hoover. New owners
took it over within the last year or so and changed its emphasis to
Persian home cooking. One of the owners brought his sister over from
Iran to cook. It will be both familiar and exotic, with elements of
Greek and Indian cuisine filtered through a Persian lens.

Down the road I'd like to do another Cheesedown. Don't know if I can
wait until April 15, but that was the perfect day for the prior one
because I bought a lot of cheese without having to pay 10% tax on it.

Oh Ginza sounds good. Haven't eaten on the grill side yet. We usually
stick to sushi and something small from the kitchen.

Also, we've never had Persian before, so that intrigues me.

Saigon Noodle House is worth a consideration, too.

Well, we've narrowed it down to six places recommended by three
people. What about the others? Where would you like to go for the next
Chowdown?

I like Ginza and Saigon, so I'm fine with either--prefer the Ginza atmosphere/options, and I also haven't eaten on the grill side. Ali Baba's, if talk turns in that direction, would be fine by me, too. (Can't get behind Do-Di-Yos; had a disappointing experience there.) Sorry to be so noncommittal--I suppose my top two choices would be Ginza and Ali Baba.

Let's schedule an evening at Ginza then! When is a good time for all? Shall we post a brief note on Chowhound to refer the hounds over here for a decision?

Ginza - awesome!
Any time, you name the date and time we'll be there!

Ok, lets start looking at dates for this. How's the week of June 21
looking for folks? What day works best?

I've had the worst time trying to post a reply on this board. This is
attempt #6:

The next few weeks will be bad for me; things won't settle down until
the week of July 12.

I hope we can get a few more people committing, too. By my count we
have 5-7, and these things work best with around 10-12, so we can try
a bunch of things on the menu and be assured we're eating things that
are exotic and new (which is the main point od Chowdowns, in my
opinion). I'm going on an old memory, but Ginza's table grill menu
items may be for 2 or more, so that would further limit the selection
if we have a half-dozen or so people.

Also, we should hold off on a Chowhound announcement until we have a
date and time.

Toward the end of July will be bad for us- we're moving that last
weekend. But the middle of July should be good. I'll be looking for a
night of relaxing and fun with good food and the Chowhounds!

How does the week of July 12 look for the rest?

That's likely a bad week for me, especially because of the primary
runoff that Tuesday. But if y'all want to go ahead with that week, I'm
fine with sitting out this one (even though I'm pumped for Ginza),
because otherwise, we're looking at August before we can do this.

Jerry and I are good anytime for Ginza. I'd like to give everyone a
chance to go to this one. You guys name the day and time, and we'll
make it.

I seem to recall that the actual tables with the grills only sat like
6 people? Of course you can get them to cook everything in the
kitchen too.

At all of the chowdowns I have attended, large numbers of plates
served family style always work best.

The newly opened Red Pearl could be an option also as they have
supposedly added more dishes (with characters and pictures on the
walls?). However, the "fresh" seafood selection there was weak the
last time I was there.

Summer is tough for me ...

CHOWHOUND FLASHMOB: We're going to Ginza tomorrow at 6 p.m. Be there
or be square.

The Bham Chowhound Flashmob was a flop!

We dined alone on a quiet meal of sushi (a caterpillar roll, adequate,
but stingy with the eel), an order gyoza (WAY overfried/dark brown,
tiny, not very good), and two tiny chicken yakitoris that were
overcooked to leathery dryness on the surface but amazingly still pink/
undercooked at the skewer. We didn't want to overorder in case anyone
actually showed up and we wound up ordering entrees as a group.
However, after eating the above, we decided we'd had enough.

Hopefully, if y'all ever do do a "real" chowdown at Ginza, the food
will be better. I have to confess, we're a little prejudiced as we've
been there a couple of times before and have never really liked
it....The sushi is the only thing I've had there that I liked on any
of our visits.

Oh dear, normally the food there is much better than what you
experienced. Course, we usually go on a Friday early evening, so it
could have something to do with different staff in the kitchen. I'm
just guessing.

Jerry and I spent the day sorting and packing up the apartment, trying
not to get too much in a time bind before we move. Also, had a pork
roast in the oven on a slow roast. Timing was bad, or we'd have been
there with bells on!
