I am new to Affinity Photo. I was pleased to see that it was possible to use Topaz plugins. However I cannot workout how to get Affinity to recognise where they are. I have followed the Help topic and looked on this forum but am not getting anywhere.

Mine didn't show up adding the photoshop plug-in directory either, but when I added the path "C:\Program Files\Topaz Labs" to the Photoshop Plug-ins preferences in Affinity, they all showed up and worked fine.

I am using Affinity Photo on a Gigabyte laptop with Windows 10 and Core I-7 with plenty of ram. I have installed Topaz and NIK plugins and they will start when going to Filters/Plugins/.... However, when the Topaz or NIK program starts it shows only a black rectangle and not the picture??

I also have a number of Topaz filters. I installed them in Affinity Photo and they work.
With the exception of ReMask of course ( which I can use as standalone ).

Windows 7 Pro machine.
I must add that I added them one by one.

I am also new to affinity and have a i-mac with latest updates - I have all the topaz plugins - I cannot see how to get them to install - I no longer have photoshop - I did try to navigate to the topaz folder but couldn't get it to add - wonder what i am doing wrong - can I install all of the plug ins even though at the moment some don't work or would that mess up affinity photo? THanks for your help

Gator...... can you post instructions on how you did this photo?? i have tired and have yet to recieve those results.....

also has topaz made photoshop crash on you yet?? i did once on me....... i have been tossing and turning on the idea of buying this ... i have just been using the trial version .......

any help will help..........

thanks

I agree with you Kelly. but many people like that look, so I thought I'd share.

but actually the software allows much more subtle edits that could be useful to photographers who get paid for their services.

Thanks for mentioning Topaz. I am new to Flickr (and to Vancouver) and I just downloaded it and have been having a lot of fun playing with it. I'd post an example photo here but I haven't learned how yet. Topaz is easier than Flickr!

Very impressed with the results, the original of this shot was boring and lifeless. Topaz lifted a lot of detail from the shot and brought out the reflections, turning it into a keeper. My wife doesnt like the look as she commented that it makes things look dirty due to how it boosts the contrast (the wall in this shot was a clean white). But thats down to individual taste. I should also say that results are not great on every photo.

Run times are slow for me, but i find it helps if you turn off the noise attenuation until you are ready to process the full image. Even then, with a 6mb file it can take a few minutes on a new intel dual core laptop with 2Gb memory. I think the only way to reduce times is to process smaller images, go without noise suppression or update your machine.

As to the dirty wall problem, you could select the wall and inverse it out, then apply the filter. Or make a duplicate layer and overlay or other choice and clean it up.

Because you can select parts of the photo, you can make really interesting weird things. Still playing with it myself.

i used it on CS2 too....... works fine....... when i first downloaded the trial it crashed photoshop a couple of times but i think they fixed that bug....... so i downloaded the trial again and no problems ...... just slow...... while its processing you can make yourself a pot of coffee....

still cool program

I have it now and really like what it did for my mountain... I know it has it's place but I have Lucis also and I can work with this easier to get what I want... Cost is better also !!!

Here's a Topaz treatment w/ vibrance. I'm getting the hang of it, I think. It seems to be a memory hog, or maybe I just have a weak system. It's giving Lucis a real run for its' money in my book. I really like the noise reduction. Thanks to KMicros for the heads up on the noise reduction.

Edit: Forgot to mention - Gator, I really like the reflection of the clouds in the football helmet in your pic.

A second image using the vibrant preset with some softening in Topaz. I needed to replace the sky because Topaz turned the original into a gray mass that was unacceptable.

Since you guys seem to like this, I thought this might interest you.

I used four different presets (Dramatic, Vibrant, Small Detail and Psychadelic) on four different layers duplicating a layer after each presetthis, . I put Dramatic in softlight blending mode, Lowered the opacity on Vibrant and masked out part of psychadelic.

then I did the old stamp visible trick and did some manual sliding on the sliders.

boowho..................you say that you own both lucis and topaz.......if someone wanted the lucis look, but could not spend the money, are similar results possible with topaz?

they look kind of similar in the examples here, but not really that similar.

thanks

i just downloaded the trial and find it way too slow to use. it takes very long after each adjustment to see any results............i don't have the patience to wait 30 seconds for each adjustment i want to make
ages ago(permalink)

Joel stuart photography........ yes i agree with you that they look similar... but at the same time not........ i think with gators football player this program looks more like lucis......... but with other photos in the post some look like HDR..... i really think it is what preset you chose to use..... some presets are very strong with strong results while i like the crispness that vibrance presets does expecially with landscape photos or photos that have alot of color ( really makes things pop )

so after all my babbling on......... i would say yes to your answer ........ i only downloaded the trial version of topaz but after playing with some photos i am considering buying it before the price goes up in sep 1

hope this helps........ :)

if you previewed any of the tutorials on the Topaz Adjust site you would have seen the designers comments on why it will run slow for some operations, Turning off the Auto noise reduction will speed it up.

It isn't as good as lucis and produces a very soft effect, but for 40 bucks I guess it is a cheap alternative. Hdr gives better results and is cheaper then lucis, why not buy one of those programs instead.

Thanks, all, for the info. I, too, find the plug- in is much too slow for regular use, although I would use it from time to time. I tried it on the simplify preset on a child's portrait, and it created a pleasant softening effect. But the vibrant preset shown below did more than I was able to with my own fix.

These two photos were processed with Topaz Adjust, I did not use presets but went through each tab and worked these results. I turned off the noise filter first then applied it last, since it does the most work and is quite slow. I am very pleased with the operation of this plug in. The photo of Atlantis was taken with a telephoto from 3 miles away and the noise filter did a fantastic job without any noticeable effect on picture details, best Ive used as yet.

2 things;
1, making an image larger without loss of quality is very difficult. I was recently looking for a program to do this. I wanted to use it to make a print much larger than I could normally make from the size files I have.

The ones that did the best job were too expensive for me to afford.
(IOW, they weren't free)

However, Fast Stone Viewer does a pretty good job for a free program.

2, I tried this resizer and the largest size it will make is 1024x768 which is more than good enough for the web but not so good for prints of decent siz. If you want the ability to make good size prints, you should probably do what was suggested above; resize to a smaller copy of you pic, and use that to experiment in Topaz, then when you have the results you want, apply them to the larger version and just wait for the program to do it's thing.

I've been trying PhotoWiz's ContrastMaster - it does work on 16 bit images and runs pretty fast here. It has presets as well as offering lots of control. I don't believe that it offers any noise reduction though.

It seems to me that you could get similar results with either the Photomatix, Artizen or Dynamic-Photo HDR programs (or PS plug-ins).

I was a little let down by this program. the slow load times and picture quality seemed to not be so great. I'm glad it worked for some, just didn't work for me (I'll just stick with hi-pass, smart sharpen and shadows/highlights)

The thing is, to use topaz in a useful way forget about the presets. The noise reduction in Topaz adjust is really very good. I was Skeptical at first when i saw some of the overdone images, but dig a little deeper and use the controls sensibly and it turns out it is a pretty good plug. The only plug-ins i tend to use are the ones that you can not reproduce with any amount of effort in Photoshop alone, noise reduction being one of these. I mostly use imagenomic noiseware pro but there are circumstances where i can see i would use topaz in preferance and thats saying somthing because i hold imagenomic in very high regard !
