I've tried both online services and software, but it fails and even freezes in readers as the file is too many pages long; therefore dividing it into several smaller redable files would help

Based on the comment thread, you want to edit the text of the book. The comment thread is going entirely in the wrong direction. The first point to understand is that .mobi is essentially just a .epub file wrapped up in Amazon's proprietary code. Kindle Unpack (Google it) is a free utility that will break open the mobi package so you can access the HTML files inside. There is an epub file in there too. Either edit the HTML files or just grab the epub file and do what you want to from there.

This is all assuming that you are not able to edit the mobi with Calibre. It probably has DRM protection since it's a dictionary. We're all dying to know which definition you're editing by the way ?

You can also do this without installing Calibre. This would be really handy on a Chromebook, for example. There is a free, online site called EPUB Converter that will let you upload the epub and it lets you then download the mobi equivalent.

It's known that Amazon Kindle eBook store provides much better and cheaper eBooks than others. As an eBook lover, you may often purchase interesting books on Kindle online eBook store. Trying to convert a pdf file to ePub to read on iPad and eventually upload to the Apple store. I have tried Calibre, Wondershare (paid version) and pdf to epub converter. I also have the native inDesign file used to create the pdf and tried exporting it as an ePub file. Of course it worked but when viewed on the iPad, the formatting was off. Every ePub file I have created has had formatting issues when viewed on the iPad. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

But you have to be aware of limitations in the export--InDesign epub export is not at the point where you can expect everything to look the same as you have it laid out. There are specific fixes for the exported html and the css.

In addition to Liz's boks, you might check out the video tutorials I've done on lynda.com for this, called InDesign CS to ePub and the iPad. There are 3 diff. titles, one each for InDesign CS4, CS5, and CS.5. Working on another for CS6. Here's the link to the CS5.5 one: _cs55epub

Another good place to ask InDesign > EPUB questions (or any epub question) is on Twitter with the #eprdctn hash tag; ebook production folk use that tag. Not sure if you're into Twitter or not, but it's worth it for that alone.

It's kind of amazing that e-books and the epub spec is so popular and yet the state of making ebooks is still kind of in the semi-dark ages. If it weren't for Anne-Marie and Elizabeth I wouldn't be on the verge of finishing my institute's first InDesign to ebook conversion.

Are you looking for a PDF to EPUB converter on PC or for the ipad? The same with you, I have a PDF that I converted to epub in PDF Converter so I could import it into iBooks. It worked but the color images all came out looking like photo negatives.

The hardest lesson I had to learn is that with epubs, you surrender any fantasies of control over formatting, layout, everything that you think is creative and cool. It's no wonder you think it doesn't look right. Epub is exactly like CSS/HTML in that you set up your design with your divs and your type styles and all that, but then it's going to look different on each platform. Don't think it's ever going to look like your InDesign pages. It's very cut and dried with minimal control over line breaks, page breaks, and how type and art line up. Once you get used to it, however, it's kind of liberating.

I've been using Calibre for a while now to convert pdfs to ePub for reading on my iPod Touch (via the Stanza App). It does butcher graphic print pdfs from time to time, but it's overall the best tool I've found for the job like Vibosoft.

PRC is a generic format, calibre supports PRC files with TextRead and MOBIBook headers.PDB is also a generic format. calibre supports eReader, Plucker (input only), PML and zTxt PDB files.DJVU support is only for converting DJVU files that contain embedded text. These are typically generated by OCR software.MOBI books can be of two types Mobi6 and KF8. calibre fully supports both. MOBI files often have .azw or .azw3 file extensions.DOCX files from Microsoft Word 2007 and newer are supported.

The first thing to realize is that most e-books have two tables of contents. One is the traditional Table of Contents, like the ToC you find in paper books. This Table of Contents is part of the main document flow and can be styled however you like. This ToC is called the content ToC.

Then there is the metadata ToC. A metadata ToC is a ToC that is not part of the book text and is typically accessed by some special button on a reader. For example, in the calibre E-book viewer, you use the Show Table of Contents button to see this ToC. This ToC cannot be styled by the book creator. How it is represented is up to the viewer program.

In the MOBI format, the situation is a little confused. This is because the MOBI format, alone amongst mainstream e-book formats, does not have decent support for a metadata ToC. A MOBI book simulates the presence of a metadata ToC by putting an extra content ToC at the end of the book. When you click Go to Table of Contents on your Kindle, it is to this extra content ToC that the Kindle takes you.

If you have a hand edited ToC in the input document, you can use the ToC detection options in calibre to automatically generate the metadata ToC from it. See the conversion section of the User Manual for more details on how to use these options.

Finally, I encourage you to ditch the content ToC and only have a metadata ToC in your e-books. Metadata ToCs will give the people reading your e-books a much superior navigation experience (except on the Kindle, where they are essentially the same as a content ToC).

The newer AZW3 format has proper support for a metadata ToC. However, theKindle firmware tends to malfunction if you disable the generation of theend-of-file inline ToC. So it is recommended that you leave the generatedToC alone. If you create an AZW3 file with a metadata ToC and noend-of-file generated ToC, some features on the Kindle will not work, suchas the Page Flip feature.

In order to convert a collection of HTML files in a specific order, you have tocreate a table of contents file. That is, another HTML file that contains linksto all the other files in the desired order. Such a file looks like:

Then, just add this HTML file to the GUI and use the Convert button to createyour e-book. You can use the option in the Table of Contents section in theconversion dialog to control how the Table of Contents is generated.

You can get help on any individual feature of the converters by mousing overit in the GUI or running ebook-convert dummy.html .epub -h at a terminal.A good place to start is to look at the following demo file that demonstratessome of the advanced features html-demo.zip.

calibre can directly connect to all the major (and most of the minor) e-bookreading devices, smartphones, tablets, etc. In addition, using theConnect to folder function you can use it with any e-book readerthat exports itself as a USB disk. Finally, you can connect wirelessly to anydevice that has a web browser using the calibre Content server.
