Hello everybody
I need some help pretty urgently.
I uninstalled Illustrator version 25.4.1 (or 25.x.x...) because it gave me errors with the plugin "DxfDwgFileFormat.aip" (Export to DWG option missing).
I then wanted to restore and reinstall it, but it is no longer visible among previous available versions and I cannot update my macOS (currently Mojave 10.14.6).
1. you can install the latest and 1 version prior versions using the cc desktop app. you must have a subscription because previous versions are not available with trials. other versions are revealed after clicking file preferences>apps>tick show older apps (at panel bottom).
2. for versions cc 2019 and older, use prodesign tools.com*.
3. for versions newer than cc 2019 but older than one previous version, contact adobe
you should be able to install v25.0. and there's an offchance that once that's installed, you might be able to update it to the last v25 versions, but that's tricky and iffy. but repost if you have v25.0 installed and want to try to update it.
thank you very much for your reply, i currently have version 24.3 installed... i also had version 25 which was the most recent and compatible with my system and which i unfortunately uninstalled because it gave problems that i hoped to solve by reinstalling it... i never should have to do it......
I did exactly what you explained in point 1 with the desktop app (5.9.0.373), and in the settings I set "show older apps" but I don't see version 25...
I installed v24.3 and version 23.1.1 (I need it for old plugins)... but the v25.0 version doesn't let me see it as installable... It seems strange to me that you can only have two previous versions (for photoshop I have many more).
Cmd+I still shows that info. First it shows that it is created by Illustrator in general, but further down, it does still show that version it was saved as. Perhaps there is an arrow that you need to expand?
What version of Illustrator are you using? When I do Command-i all I get is that it is an Adobe Illustrator Document. Using File>File Info>Basic all it says is what version the file was created in. As I said in my first post the same is true using Bridge. I did find that if you save back to an early CS version it will ask you legacy questions when you try to reopen the file using CC 2018.
Do you have Adobe Bridge? If you launch it and navigate to your file within that app, then you can view the file properties, which will show the version of Illustrator the file was originally created in.
Command i, does give you general information, but does not tell you the illustrator version. All of the arrows have been expanded, just don't see this info anywhere. Can someone help clarify how I can verify which version these files were saved?
Saving our work is a MAJOR issue! Since updating, I'm having different ones. Sometimes when I command/save, then reopen that file, the last change I made is gone. Now, when I do a save as, Illustrator refuses to save the file as the name I input. It looks like I copy/paste a file name the client wants, then if I alter it within the save as window, it refuses to save the file at all.
This has just happened to me and the only relief I have felt is reading these comments and seeing I am not alone. I saved my file on creative cloud so that it will back up as I work. My auto recovery is on for both locally stored and cloud stored files. I was connected to and used a good internet all through the day. Yet, my app crashed and is opening to yesterday's version of work. My whole 8 hours plus of today's work gone. I have searched every where. Googled all things and cried my eyes out. Returning to start the project when I should be resting is nothing short of heartbreaking.
Just happened to me in version 26.2.1 on Windows 11. I lost about 6 hours of work. I've disabled data recovery in preferences, as this is the only thing I can imagine might contribute to the problem. So strange to save my work by hand every 15 minutes and still lose an entire day of work.
This happen to me just now with version 26.0.2, lost 5 hours of work on a document. I only have the pdfs with the latest changes, the ai file shows an older version. Adobe supposed to be a premium product, what is this?
I don't know if this is even the reason this happens but maybe worth checking out for those of you who are still having this issue. I was having this issue on one of our PCs only. We recently upgraded to new PCs and when I was transferring files from the old PC I discoverd about 2 years worth of Illustrator temp files so they were not being cleaned up automatically. This is the only PC this was happening on and the only one where we had the issue. As I said I have no idea if its related but maybe people want to check if their system is holding on to all the temp files.
I've had this problem a few times over the last year and again today. I renamed the file before opening, made my changes and saved as .ai and pdf. I opened the pdf to check that it was fine and all was good. I emailed off to a client and they rang to say the file had none of the changes I made. I reopened the ai and pdf and none of the changes had been saved. This is incredibly disappointing, we pay for a premium product and bugs like this are unacceptable, I look incompetent to my client and I'm now worried about every file I create not being correct. Adobe are you going to pay for the problem if I send a project to print assuming it's the correct version and it's just randomly decided to default to an earlier file?
Absolutely terribly frustrating some of my files do not save even if i click save number of times when I reopen it's back to the old version (this occures when I save a pdf version in the same file ALTHOUGH I HAVE SAVED THE .AI BEFORE EXPORT. small pdf version with no layers) Lost an hour of work feel very angry.
This has happened to me multiple times, and I am constantly checking ai files to prevent it from happening again, but just let one slip through and lost about an hours work. This happens with larger, more complex ai files, where I'm inclined to export a smaller sized PDF, which does not retain layer info. Meaning your work is gone forever. Very annoying. Please fix!
same problem here, strange that no one seemed to have noted the reason yet,
this happens as the warning, when trying to write a PDF file while saving, or closing the document while saving has disappeared. so this usually happens on larger files that take quite some time to save.
means: in newer illustrator versions, to avoid this bug that causes total loss of the last version,
you have to wait until "prepare saving" and the percentage of the saving has run through the whole process, 0 - 100%, and disappears on the top of the window.
Had this problem again today 24 August 2021... its happening all the time. I save the illustrator file, then save as pdf to share the file. Opening the saved Illustrator file then shows that the file wasn't saved amnd is the old version. The pdf is correct, but now I have lost hours of work and have to try to import the pdf to get the work back. Pathetic!
This is happening to me- clearly the issue wasnt fixed. I thought I was crazy- like I swore I fixed these things! Hours of work lost, really really annoying. And all small detail work on a very large scale file, so extra annoying to find what actually saved and what didn't.
I have had the same annoying problem after saving to a pdf the saved file reverts to a previously saved version. Clearly this issue was not fixed in the 24.0 release .. im running 24.2.3 and have had some embarrassing explaining to do. The thumbnails also does not update.

I am busy designing illustrations in Adobe Illustrator for a customer, and they have kindly asked me to save my illustrator files so it is compatible with all versions, and they don't run into any problems. I would just like to know which version I should save it as? The options are: CS6, CS5, CS4, CS3, CS2, CS, Illustrator 10, 9, 8, 3, and Japanese illustrator 3.
If you save to a legacy version, often artwork can be expanded/flatted or otherwise changed in order for it to be read by the legacy version. How much anything changes depends greatly upon the actual construction within Illustrator.
In many instances, the best balance between compatibility and construction retention is an Illustrator 8 EPS file. But, be aware, saving to AI8 will, in all probability alter the artwork - especially if you used things like transparency and blending modes.
For a direct Illustrator to Illustrator transfer, Illustrator CS6 will work better than the AI8 EPS. But, of course, this assumes users are using CS6 or newer. But, this avoids any "subscription-based" version, which is common.
A third option is merely a PDF. Since all PDFs can be opened in Illustrator, you may experience the optimum transfer by merely saving the AI file as a high quality PDF. Then whatever version of Illustrator is in use later, will read and adjust the PDF artwork as necessary. Saving as a PDF will often be as compatible as AI8 EPS, if not more so because PDF will retain much of the artwork construction as it is.
I'll stress again that "compatible with all versions" isn't "real-world" feasible. You must set a minimum. No one using a computer operating system released in the last 10 years can run any version of the application older than CS6. There's little point to saving to any legacy version other than CS6 if you are saving as an .ai file. However, some third-party software, such as embroidery or engraving applications, can only see EPS files. So, that's where AI8 EPS comes in.
Knowing the expected usage would assist in targeting the version appropriately, or you may consider merely saving as CS6, AI8 EPS, and high quality PDF, and a native file for whatever version of Ai you are using for each piece and providing 4 files for each illustration. After all saving as another version is a few seconds for you, but compatibility issues later may cost someone hours or days to get around.
