Hello Friends,
This is from Sowmya who is our TMAD member. She visited a girl by name Rosy who is doing commendable work for the past 4 years. She was born in a poor family and after completing her studies instead of aspiring for high paying jobs she decided to take up social causes. She is running a school and orphanage.

====================================================

Dear Prasanthi

Met Rosy tday. I should say - she is just an amazing young lady.
She is running a school for the people of that slum (an area called Papireddy Colony or something...near Chandanagar MMTS station). She is running an orphanage on the other side of that MMTS station, near her house. All this, with no regular supply of outside funds. Most of it is financed by her family only!
School has around 40 kids. All of them were rag-picker kids or beggar kids before.
Orphanage, I did not visit (endala effect). But, there are students who are around 15-16 years too.
Its been 4 years since her org is running, 3 years since its registration. School is now running in a rented house. A new building is finally due for construction, as someone gave land in that area. I am amazed at how she is managing all these, since she is parellely studying MSW or some course in Rodha Mistry college.

Their needs: Note books for kids are available now. She says, she is planning to buy text books. Some furniture like Table/Chair etc are needed for school. For Orphanage, since it includes boarding, needs also are more. A/c to her, average cost for a school kid in orphanage is 3000 per year - considering only educational expenses.
These are some of the inputs she gave me, among several others.

I did not decide yet on what I should do now. I said that I am interested in purchase of textbooks. I told her that I will inform about her to TMAD and see if theres anything that can be done from your side. She expressed interest in meeting TMAD people.

Met a couple of people in that slum, talked to some of the kids there too.

Actually, if its possible for u to meet, I would rather suggest u talk to her once, for these reasons:
1. She is also dedicated to her cause
2. She communicates very well
3. We will be inspired

Hi Venkat,

This is Rosy's number: 9391358214.

We get to know about her through Nirupama who works in AppLabs.
AppLabs somehow contacted this girl and thats how Nirupama came to
know about Rosy. Nirupama in turn told to us.

If anyone of you plan to go and meet her, please take the photographs
of Rosy, the school and the orphanage.

Thank you.

with regards,

Hello Venkat,

TMAD is one of the groups that are part of BOSF. The full form of TMAD
is To Make A Difference.

We started our journey three years back and we were a yahoo group of
friends trying to make a difference in our own way. We recently
registered our group - (Reg: 1506/2007).

We have members in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai (one), Nellore,
Delhi(one) and US. We meet once in a month. We communicate through our
yahoo group, ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tomakeadifference ).

We mainly concentrate on Education and Health, offering financial
suppport for individuals for their studies and surgeries. We believe
that development is not due to few organizations but with the active
involvement of every citizen.

To reach that goal, we have been working to unite likeminded groups
and bring them on to a platform. We were successful in our effort and
we conducted a meeting on Sep 9th with the likeminded groups that we
know and we created the group, birdsofsamefeathers. (

Venkat: Any update after meeting with Rosy? Her commitment seems commendable and I would like to know how I can be of help as anyone taking care of orphanage children are of special interest to me.

I will also have a word with her sometime. Does she speak Telugu or English?

Thank you

Hi Suresh,

Last time Vasu garu visited on the weekend. He could not meet any of the children. He suggested that we should go on a weekday so that we could see and meet the children and also we'll have a clear idea of how the school is running.

Hi Venkat,

That is very useful information and highly commendable job being done by Rosy. My only constraint at this point is time. Based on your understanding of the environment, do let me know their immediate needs. I will see how I can contribute.

If you plan to visit on the weekend, I can join you. Week days are almost impossible due to work pressures.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you

Hello Friends,

Greetings.

This morning I visited Rosy. Sowmya and her friend, Swathi also came
there.

Rosy is the third child among the six children of the couple,
Balaswami and Suseela. Balaswami wanted to make her a nun and he has
been telling her to take Mother Teresa as inspiration. She doesn't
want to be a nun as there would be so many restrictions and the area
of work also would be limited.

She started taking free tuition classes while she was studying degree.
But as the duration is limited, she thought of running a school. She
opened a school on 18th of July, 2007. She supports 20 orphans and
out of them 5 are studying in private colleges. They come here during
holidays. 40 students are attending her school. This school is for the
students of Nursery to 3rd class. In the evening time, she takes
tuition classes as usual.

She also trains the children for every competition. One of the
students stood first in Rangareddy District in 7th standard. He is now
studying in a private school. The students also got prizes in various
competitions. Dance Master Lawrence sends one of his aides to train
the children for competitions. Actress Jayasudha also visits this
place for any functions.

It costs around Rs. 35,000 a month for Rosy for all expenses (orphan
children, food, school fee, teachers' pay and all). They got land for
free from a donor and they will be constructing a school. She pays Rs.
1000 for each teacher (now there are 2 teachers) and 1000 rs. is the
rent for school (only two rooms).

The immediate requirements are:

1. Gas Stove (Mrs. Suseela cooks using wood.)
2. Cooker
3. Water Filter
4. Chairs
5. Tables
6. Fan
7. Pencils
8. Erasers

They have enough of note books and required number of slates.

Rosy named the school as Sarada Vidyaniketan in the name of her
beloved teacher who died few years back. Mrs. Sarada is very fond of
Rosy and Rosy studied 2nd class to 10th class in the school where Mrs.
Sarada used to teach. Mrs. Sarada has two sons and she wanted to adopt
Rosy for her love for girl children. But Rosy's father denied.

Rosy also visits the slums near Miyapur and Silparamam. She is doing
MSW in Rodha Mistry College in Gachibowli. There were many lucrative
offers too after seeing her service. Many 'established' organizations.
They asked her to club her organization in those established
organizations and they were ready to pay her Rs. 20,000 a month. She
and her father refused as they are doing the service selflessly.

The plight of the children is very heartrending. Of course they are
very active and they are grasping the subjects very well. But their
situation is pathetic. They are not completely aware of the world.
They have the same innocent smiles on their faces. Most of them have
horrible stories. They were used to all kinds of bad habits like
liquor, tobacco to mention the few.

It takes great courage, strong will, determination and relentless
pursuit, perseverance to work with this type of kids and that to by
convincing the reluctant parents. Rosy is really a wonderful human
being. When I expressed that it is a great work she replied that she
doesn't feel so and it is her duty to serve the society. When I
expressed that not everyone thinks that way, she quoted that she is
not interested to think about others. She is only bothered about her
work.

We need to plan for arranging a medical camp there.

If we can support her she can scale her efforts to other two slums
which she visits. So far that is a single handed effort. Her friends
assist her only at the time of any functions. At all other times, she
is the only one who does everything.

She pays for the school teachers. Her efforts are in convincing the
parents and the children. It is better if other members of our group
also visit them once.

Actually I forgot to mention few other things. They all said
chocolates when I asked them what they want. When I insisted they said
biscuits. Rosy only asked them don't they need fruits and all. For
vegetables, they said 'no' :)

The two elder children, Mohan and the other boy, they wanted Video
games. It seems they used to play the games on Computer. He said lot
many varieties of games. (I never played any game on computer except
one time. So I have no idea). I told them like if Mohan writes 7th
exams and the other guy, 10th exams, we will think of buying video
games otherwise 'no'.

When I was talking with the kids I felt like it would be good if we
can arrange for good games and also the scientific stuff.

Hi Prashanti,

Biscuits, chacolates, video games we can manage easily. But what about their regular needs like soaps, note books, pencils, blankets? They are comfortable with them?

I have some computer games and I will give you in a CD. Also some good movies of chaplin.

Organizing a medical camp will do good. Also presenting a FIRST AID KIT helps them. I can donate that.

Regards

Suresh

Hello Friends,

The purpose of BOSF is being fulfilled. To make it more worthwhile, I
have few suggestions.

So far there are 5 to 6 different groups who are interested to help
Rosy in her efforts. Let us not end up providing the same stuff. Just
now I spoke with Naresh Kandala of Cognizant. He also said that he
wanted to visit this place and do something on a regular basis for
this orphanage/school.

I think it is better if the representatives of all groups fix one day
and go there so that we can study the requirement and the needs in
future to take the efforts to next level and then offer help
accordingly.

I am not looking at providing the mere requirements. There are two
other slums which she spoke about, Miyapur and Silparamam. She has the
patience, knowledge and experience on how to deal with such kids. If
all of us can together help in taking care of those children as well
without giving too much burden to her, that would be great. Please
think in those lines.

For example, she told there are around 200 kids in Miyapur slum. If we
can ask her what is all that she require to take care of them (if one
or two volunteers who can assist her in doing so or paid members also
fine) and how we can channelize the effort, that would be good.

Also one important point to note is that there is a govt. school near
the school that she runs and one political person asked her on why she
does not encourage students to go there and study. She told that there
are 5 teachers. If we can motivate those teachers as well and try to
understand what their problems and if we can help them too, that would
be one welcoming change. Why Rosy has to end up paying for teachers?
Instead she can take care of convincing and inspiring children to
change and these schools can actually educate them in true sense.

Rosy is constructing a school in the land given to her for free. I
thought it would be good if it is an orphanage rather than a school.
But didn't say as it would be too early to suggest her something.

We have to understand the circumstances there and see how we can
utilize all resources and hope for an optimal output or ROI.

Friends,

This is the update on Rosy's school and orphanage:

1. We, TMAD members, gave 50 kgs of rice to the orphanage (This is given to us by Mrs. Radhika of Telugu Blog group long back)

2. Kiran working in ADP spoke with the CSR guys and convinced them to help Rosy. They want to adopt the school for the coming two years. We spoke with Rosy and asked her to submit the profile in a structured format. She will be mailing the details to Kiran in this week.

3. Naresh from Cognizant is also interested to help through their CSR. As the place is nearer to their company, he wants to plan regular visits too.

If all the people who are interested in this school/orphanage, can plan and visit on one particular day, it would be easy on how we can help her in scaling her efforts, specially the slums in Miyapur and Silparamam.

In today's papers there is a news item about a slum very close to hi-tech city.

Thank you.

with regards,
PRASANTHI.
