Friends,

One important news.

Mr. Raj Bhat (may be around 24) and Niloufer (12 yr old girl) came to Srinagar Colony requesting for help in the form of either money or Rice/Dal/Oil or clothes or chappals whatever.

They are Kashmiri Pandits and came from Kashmir to Hyderabad 20 days ago for shelter. Around 100 families out of which 300 are children.

I asked them if there is any support for them from political parties, Mr. Raj said that they are getting good help. I also asked if they have permission to stay here and why they have chosen Hyderabad, he said they have permission and one Mr. Bhat (Bhat saab in his words) is taking care of them. It seems he called them here. Some of them went to Pune and some to Hyderabad. He says more than 1000 families are living in tents in Delhi.

I asked what is the stand of J & K government, he replied that Jammu govt. is asking them to come back and their Bhat saab is discussing with them and if they satisfy they will go back otherwise they want to live here it seems.

I have taken the xerox copies of the request, requirement and photo. Will scan them by this evening. It seems they are staying in tents near Charminar area.  I am planning to go there this Sunday morning. My parents also are coming with me. Are you interested to visit them?

Share A Service organization is collecting used clothes. Will request them to give those clothes to these families.  Already I have some clothes collected by AMMA Organization.

I rang to Sriram of Manavata group. He said that he has 20 new blankets that he wanted to distribute and he can give them.

Why this Sunday itself in the sense not to delay the help. Sunday we will go with whatever we have and we will collect the details. The idea (my thought alone, yet to discuss with other members of my group. I hope they will not object.) is to go there on 1st of January.

This is also to show solidarity to them and to say we are all Indians. If at all we find that their need is genuine, let us all together raise fund and give to them whatever they require.
--
Thank you.

with regards,
PRASANTHI.

Friends,

I couldn't visit that day as the person Raj Bhat who visited my home
was not at the place at the time I wanted to go.

But heard that KPs are here for long and many a time people come and
go. A Church in Sec'bad and Value Labs employees helped them. Sandhata
Software (Prakash of Manavata) also contributed rice to them.

Thank you.

with regards,
Prasanthi.

Dear all,

It is a year since Prasanthi Garu sent a message regarding support for Kashmiris taking refuge here in Hyderabad.

Chandu from CSA (CC'd) recently visited a similar camp which has around 100 people.  Apparently the earlier folks got rehabilitated back and the current set of folks are hoping they will return by March.  In the meantime, they are finding it very difficult to satisfy basic needs and are looking for all the support they can get.

Below is the note from Chandu.  Do any of you have experience working with these folks?  Please comment and let Chandu know if you would like to help out.

Regards,
Srihari
-------
Hi Friends,
Greetings from Chandra Sekhar, CSA. Yesterday, we happened to visit a kashmiri rehabilitants' camp located near Falaknuma railway station on platform No.1 side. in fact these people were going from house to house showing a file about their camp and asking for help in the form of money, food grains and oil. out of curiosity, I inquired about their camp and when they arrived here etc, I took their number and address. they invited to visit their camp. thus yesterday we (leela and myself) had been there.
Highlights of the visit:
  • About 100 families have been migrated (they said about 1000 members)
  • staying in very temporary shelters (we can't call them tents because they are made with sarees and not completely covering the inhabiting area)
  • only one borewell is there and no basic amenities and hygiene
  • young children are unable to cope up with the comparatively high temperatures
  • medical expenditure too increasing
  • amount collected from people is utilised for purchasing groceries and those groceries are distributed to the families but they are unable to meet their complete food requirement
  • according to them, our govt. is discussing with J&K govt. for their resettlement in Jammu and they are hoping to go back by March.
  • people who can speak hindi and english are going for fund raising and the rest mostly speak kashmiri
  • their living conditions are very pathetic
Can we help them?
  • in providing food
  • helping them in earning temporary livelihood eg. kashmiri women good at embroidery; can some contract with groups be made? some men are good at weaving carpets. we need to explore (daily supporting may be difficult unless they earn their bread)
  • educating their children who have become school-less
  • may be some clothes but need to check whether they really need
  • any other ideas please welcome
we were really moved by visiting their camp. looking forward for your response
regards

Srihari,
it is more than 100 families not 100 people. they said around 1000 members (it may be exaggerated. i don't know). they are kept in three places and we visited only one place which is near the falaknuma rly station towards platform no.1.
